  3. EXCESS Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!” Amos 4:1 You levy a straw tax on the poor and impose a tax on their grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. Amos 5:8

  5. NATIONAL SELF-INTEREST “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6

  7. OVER-EXPLOITATION “For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unploughed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove. Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed. Exodus 23:10-12

  8. EXCESS E NATIONAL SELF-INTEREST N OVER-EXPLOITATION O UNFAIR TRADE U G G H H IS

  9. UNFAIR TRADE “Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his own people work for nothing, not paying them for their labour. Jeremiah 22:13 Hear this, you who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land, saying, “When will the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we may market wheat?” – skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales. Amos 8:4-6

  10. EXCESS E NATIONAL SELF-INTEREST N OVER-EXPLOITATION O UNFAIR TRADE U GREED G H H IS

  11. UNFAIR TRADE The greedy bring ruin to their households, but the one who hates bribes will live. Proverbs 15:27 The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the Lord will prosper. Proverbs 28:25 By justice a king gives a country stability, but those who are greedy for bribes tear it down. Proverbs 29:4 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Ephesians 5.3

  12. EXCESS E NATIONAL SELF-INTEREST N OVER-EXPLOITATION O UNFAIR TRADE U GREED G HOARDING H IS

  13. HOARDING People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God’s blessing on the one who is willing to sell. Proverbs 11:26 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners. Ecclesiastes 5:13 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. James5:3

  15. EQUALITY The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. Psalm 103:6 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Psalm 140:12

  17. NEIGHBOURLINESS Jesus said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39

  19. OBLIGATION Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. Ecclesiastes 12:13

  21. URGENCY For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 1 Corinthians 8:3-4 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives. Titus 3:14

  23. GENEROSITY Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. Psalm 112:5 The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor. Proverbs 22:9 Cornelius and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. Acts 10:2

  25. HUSBANDRY So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:27-28
