Introduction Early use of computers has been shown to improve language skills and promote children’s social development and creativity, and once at school, internet usage starts to increase. However, the dangers of the internet are also apparent – through guidance with their Parents, Teachers and other Peers, we can make the Internet a safe place to learn, play and communicate. As a school we provide a safe online environment to work in, however access to the internet at home is often without restrictions.
“I get so worried about what they might see that I feel happier if they just don’t use it.” “ I have a look if they call me over, but I don’t really know what I’m looking at!” “ What would I need a computer for really? The kids use it for school, but not me.” I am frightened of the Internet and I have no idea what my kids are doing when they are on it!

Social Networking A social networking service is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who, share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. Within the terms and conditions Facebook state that prior to creating an account, you must confirm that you are over the age of 13. Concerns are shifting from what children are ‘downloading’ in terms of content to what they are ‘uploading’ to the net.
Facebook • Create a Facebook account yourself • Add your son / daughter as a friend so you can see the information posted by them and by their friends on their page • Children will not post inappropriate messages when they know that that parents are watching them
Gaming Online gaming is not only popular with children but Adults too. The advances in technology and accessibility of consoles has meant that this has become one of the most popular past-times in Males. Often Parents allow students to play games which are not suitable – violent, language etc. – Peer pressure.
Grooming The internet provides children with endless opportunities to keep in touch with friends and family. But there’s a chance that your child may meet people online who are not who they say they are. Grooming is the word used to describe people befriending children in order to take advantage of them for sexual purposes.
Ashleigh Hall Murder • From BBC News 28th October 2009 • The body of Ashleigh Hall, 17, was found after the arrest of a 32-year-old man for traffic offences on the A177 near Sedgefield on Monday night. • Durham Police said the Darlington girl told family she was staying with a friend on Sunday night. • "She was a bit of a chatterbox, always on the phone or the computer or talking to someone in the street. She just wanted to be involved."
Sexting For many children, basic texting is almost a thing of the past. Pictures, videos and messages can all be sent instantaneously to one or many people and sometimes children may choose to share explicit material in this way. The term ‘sexting’ is used to describe the sending and receiving of sexually explicit photos, messages or video clips by text, email or posting them on social networking sites.
Cyberbullying Just as children enjoy meeting and communicating with friends online – unfortunately bullying can happen online too. Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology to bully others. It usually happens over the internet or on a mobile phone and includes things like sending abusive emails and text messages or posting nasty comments or humiliating images. Research has found that picture/video clip and phone call bullying were perceived to have more impact on the victim than traditional forms of bullying.
Pornography Each day over 5,000 new Pornography sites are created on the internet. Some of which have innocent names, which when accidently typed into a search engine / address bar will load the wrong site.

Steps to stay safe online • Talk to your Children about their online activity • Encourage them to use browser tools – Bookmarks and History • Set and agree time limits for Internet use • Move the family PC into a family room or insist the bedroom door is kept open

Conclusion • Internet is a fantastic tool if used appropriately and responsibly • Parents have a role to play in educating the use of the internet with their children • Put some rules in place, that govern the use of a family computer • Accessible in a family room only • Length of time allowed on the computer • Ask questions – find out what they are doing • …… it’s not just a case of pulling the plug!
