The Role and Mission of Business Education

Business education is a diverse discipline that is included in all educational systems. It encompasses various levels and areas such as office administration, marketing, business teaching, and economic citizenship. Its mission is to provide occupational competence, develop economic competence, strengthen basic skills, support academics, and formulate plans for continued educational growth.

Business Education: Role & Mission • Business education represents a broad and diverse discipline that is included in all educational delivery systems. • Elementary and secondary schools • One- and two-year schools and colleges • Four-year colleges and universities • Training in business and industry

B.E.: Role & Mission (cont.) • Business education can begin at any level. • It can be interrupted for a period of time and/or continued throughout the life span of the individual. • Business education includes education for: • Office administration • Marketing & retail • Business teaching • Business administration • Economic citizenship

B.E.: Role & Mission (cont) • Provide occupational competence which enables an individual to: • Get a job for which he or she is qualified. • Formulate and implement a career development plan which is responsive to personal and technological changes. • Develop positive interpersonal and leadership skills.

B.E.: Role & Mission (cont) • Develop economic competence to enable the individual to be a productive citizen and wise consumer of: • Resources • Goods • Services • Business education prepares students • for entry into and advancement in jobs within business, and equally important; • to handle their own business affairs and to function intelligently as consumers and citizens in a business economy.

B.E.: Role & Mission (cont) • Strengthen basic skills – listening, speaking, writing and computing, problem-solving, and computer-related. • Support & reinforce academics • Strengthen each individual’s self-concept and desire to succeed. • Formulate plans to ensure continued educational growth, whether it be formal or informal.
