Introduction • The Old man and the Sea tells us about the human pride and its influence on the end result. • The story is about an old man who is struggling for his survival from the beginning of the novella. • A lot of emphasis on pride and its contribution toward human attitude and response in a given situation.

  3. Ernest Hemingway • He was an author, novelist, journalist • Born – July 21, 1899 – US • Died – July2,1961 - US • Winner of the Pulitzer price and Nobel Price in Literature. “He writes as he is”. Old man and the Sea, a proof of this statement. • Art of hunting and hence no strange to killing. • Enjoyed good fight- boxing being his passion. • Physically well built.

  13. Stars and their influence on the old man • Stars – his distant friend • “The fish is my friend too”, he said aloud. “I have never seen or heard of such a fish. But I must kill him . I am glad we do not have to try to kill the stars”.(page- 75) • thank full {do not have to commit another crimes to satisfy his needs} • In the proceeding para, the old man talks about humans being lucky. • Humans are placed in a surrounding , so that they have limited and restricted boundaries to exercise their survival techniques • ways or methods for survival that could make humans have doubt on their own reason for survival

Sin and Guilt in the old man and the Sea • Old man would kill sea creatures to – get paid to feed other people • Killing an animal is a sin (suppose) therefore the source of living is a derivative of sin ---------------------- is living life a sin ? Does feel guilty about killing his own brother from the sea • “ It is enough to live on the sea and kill our true brothers”.(page 75) indication that the old man is feeling guilty

  16. Guilty • A feeling of guilt, since he killed his own brother from the sea. • Removes this guilt by giving himself reasons that can satisfy his thinking.

  17. Conclusion • Old man gets to experience and discover pride in oneself • Reaches the ultimate level of personal triumph • The kind of pride that one exhibits, changes with the gain in experience • Lies is the result of – Worry - fear aware before hand GUILT • only after reading the novella
