Math Facts about 60 • 60 is a composite number which means it has more than two factors. • Factors of 60 are: 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20,30 and 60 which are numbers that divide evenly into 60. • 60 is an abundant number which means all of its factors added together are more than the number. • Multiples of 60 are: 120,180,240,300,360,420,480,540 and 600 which are numbers 60 will go evenly into. • 60 is the smallest number with 12 different divisors which are numbers that divide evenly by 60.

  3. The Number 60 in the Real World • There are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. • 60 is a common speed limit in most places around the world (km). • An idiom for 60 means to have great speed, ease or zest. • Usually the retiring age for most people.

  4. Miscellaneous Facts • “60 Minutes” is a popular investigation T.V. show. • In marriage, 60 is usually the diamond ring anniversary. • 60 is the code for international direct dials to Malaysia. • The highest obtainable level in the “World of Warcraft” computer game.

  5. The History of the Number 60 In Ancient Rome, people didn’t make a number system that we could easily understand, they used the number sixty for a lot of reasons. The numbers back then weren’t like the ones we use today, so in Ancient Rome, it was written as “LX”, the Roman numeral. They developed a system based on the number sixty so today we have sixty seconds a minute and sixty minutes an hour.

  7. Why I Chose 60 I chose the number sixty because it has many different purposes in our world and in math. All numbers are special for something, and sixty is special because of its many meanings in our world.

  8. A World Without 60 Without the number sixty, we wouldn’t have our usual time system. We might just have 86,400 seconds a day. We also wouldn’t have our usual speed system. We might be going at 1,440 km per day instead of per hour. So sixty plays an important role in daily life in both the math world and the real world.
