Missouri Learning Standards • Define knowledge and skills students need to succeed in college and other post-secondary training and careers • Grade-Level Expectations are the current standards for: • English Language Arts • Math • Social Studies • Science • Physical Education/ Health • Fine Arts ( Music, Theater, Visual Arts) • Guidance and Counseling

CCSS Development • State led initiative • National Governor’s Association (NGA) • Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSS) • Educators, researchers, and parents from across the country, including Missouri, developed the standards • The CCSS went through two rounds of revision based of feedback from teachers including those in Missouri • In 2010, the Common Core State Standards were adopted by the Missouri State School Board to replace the ELA and Math Grade-Level Expectations

ELA Standards Comparison 6th Grade Level Expectation 6th Grade CCSS Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they “see” and “hear” when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics • Compare, contrast and analyze connections: • a. text to text (information and relationships in various fiction and non-fiction works) • *b. text to self (text ideas and own experiences) • *c. text to world (text ideas and the world by identifying how literature reflects a culture and historic time frame)

Preparation • Teacher Leaders • CCSS Curriculum Team received 3 hours of training every other month • Training was to prepare the leaders to train their teachers • Teachers • Training conducted by Leadership team and principals during professional development time • Using performance tasks with students • ELA and Math Learning Labs have focused on teacher implementing CCSS practices

  16. CCSS and Assessment • Assessments will be aligned to the Common Core State Standards (Core Academic Standards) in 2015 • Performance accounts for 70 of 140 points in the MSIP 5 Accreditation • Math and English Language Arts account for 42 of the 70 points
