Due • On the 1st of the month unless told otherwise • First book report is due October 1st
Format • Expository Essay • Five paragraphs long • Introduction, Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Body Paragraph 3, Conclusion • Thesis statement to end the introduction and conclusion paragraphs • Topic sentences to begin paragraphs (with transition words) • Details to support the main idea of the paragraph
Book Report Expectations • Plot: the events of the story • Setting: time and place • Theme: the main idea/feeling of the novel • Tone: how something sounds when it is said/written • Main Characters: protagonist, antagonist, etc. • Conflict: the problem of the story (man v. man, man v. nature, man v. himself) • Resolution: how the story ends, “resolved” • Author’s Purpose: P.I.E. – reasons why authors write • Favorite characters: explain why in detail
Book Report Expectations • Lessons: the moral of the story, what you take away from it • Funniest scene: explain why in detail • Weirdest Scene: explain why in detail • Author’s Style: choices the author makes, the sentence structure, vocabulary, etc. • Similarities between you and the characters: explain both sides in detail • Connection to another book: explain both sides in detail • Connection to the world: explain both sides in detail • Point-of-View: first person (I), second person (you), third person (Harry Potter) • Suggested Audience: who should read this book? Is it appropriate for everyone?
Important information to remember • You must cover one book report expectation in a body paragraph (three total because you have three body paragraphs) • Your essay must be typed or handwritten very neatly – I will not be printing out your essay for you! • If your printer breaks, computer emergency, etc. – e-mail me your essay until you can bring in a copy/handwrite it • Double-check for proper capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling (C.U.P.S.)
