  9. Recognizing Local Leadership in Sustainability The Beacon Award: Local Leadership toward Solving Climate Change

  10. The Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative (SEEC) is a new alliance to help cities and counties reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy. SEEC is a collaboration between three statewide non-profit organizations and California’s four Investor Owned Utilities.

  11. The Beacon Award • Recognizes cities and counties that: • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions. • Save energy. • Adopt policies and programs that promote sustainability. • Silver, Gold and Platinum Beacon Awards to recognize and celebrate local agency achievements. • www.ca-ilg.org/BeaconAward

  12. Becoming a Beacon Award Program Participant is Easy • Complete Simple Online Application • Contact Person • Status of Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Climate Action Plans (Agency & Community) • Compliance with AB 939 • Adopt a Resolution • Sample resolution & staff report available

Being a Beacon Award Program Participant • ILG highlights progress towards Beacon Award achievement. • Participant profile page on ILG website. • Use of “Proud Participant” logo. • Press release announcing participation. • Videos interviews with local officials & staff. • Stories highlighting agency’s sustainability activities. • Recognition for interim accomplishments.

  14. Winning A Beacon Award • Silver, Gold and Platinum Beacon Award levels. • Awards given to agencies that reach specific measurable achievements: • Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions; • Energy savings through energy efficiency retrofits; • Undertake activities in best practice areas.

Beacon Award Criteria Silver Beacon Award Agency facilities and operations Greenhouse gas reduction: Five percent in agency facilities and operations Energy savings: Five percent (natural gas & electricity) in agency facilities and operations from energy efficiency retrofits Community Greenhouse gas reduction: Five percent in the community as a whole Energy efficiency: One activity that promotes energy efficiency in the community Best Practice Areas One activity in each of the ten Best Practice Areas
