The Cornerstone of the Institute • TS Bank: • $250,000 w/ Matching & Other Grants = $1,000,000+ • Treynor Consolidated School: K-12. • 5 Year Pilot Project (to start - dependant on data & alternate funding) • Push influence to state and national level • With help of other organizations (IDOE, AEA, ABA, UNI, ISU, UNO, Jump$tart Coalition)

Institute Update • April 2009: • Meeting of Bank, School Faculty & Administration, Community Members, State and National Financial Literacy Experts • September 2009: • Director of TS Bank Institute hired • Financial Intelligence Pillar is current area of focus • Majority of time spent in the Treynor School system • School Year 2009-2010 activities: • Curriculum research and instruction in classrooms • Faculty/student literacy assessments • Creation of an in-school bank and other after school programs • Grant writing and professional development creation for teachers

Financial Literacy Curriculum • A vast amount of information exists in this area • 80+ curriculum resources have been reviewed during 2009-2010 school year • 33 High School • 25 Middle School • 26 Elementary School • Curriculum includes traditional classroom based materials, games, and interactive web-based programs. Materials are fee based and also offered at no charge. • A curriculum matrix is being created to identify those resources that meet IA 21st Century Financial Literacy requirements.

  10. 2009-2010 School Year Activities • Financial Literacy 6th grade exploratory class was implemented in 2nd semester. Feedback from Instructor: “Overall, I think the class went very well. Our Pre-test score average was 53%. Our Post-test score improved to 92%. We spent about 3 weeks covering themint.org content and about 3 weeks on the Toothpick Bridge simulation (students use arithmetic calculations and geometry to design, plan, and build scale model bridges.  They then learn to write checks, balance accounts, maintain a budget, and work with others to accomplish a common goal). It was an eye opener for students – especially how they now understand their parent’s point of view on money!” • Family & Consumer Sciences – Independent Living class completed a pilot of the EverFi interactive financial literacy curriculum. 14 students participated and all became certified in financial literacy.

  11. 2009-2010 School Year Activities • The Intro to Business class participated in the National Financial Capability Challenge on April 9th. This event was sponsored by the Federal Government and lesson plans and materials were provided from the US Departments of Education and Treasury. 3 Treynor students scored in the top 20% of the US. • Intro to Business class participated in the spring session of the Iowa Stock Market Game. 7 teams/35 individuals participated and a Treynor student finished 5th in the Iowa and Michigan region.

  12. 2009-2010 School Year Activities • 32 classroom activities were conducted during the weeks of April 19-23 and 26-30 to promote Iowa Money Smart Week and included: • Money Mammals for Kindergarten. • The Sticker Store for 1st Grade. • The Money Tree for 2nd Grade. • Show Me The Money for 3rd Grade. • Freebies for 4th Grade. • What Does It Cost Now? Back To The Future” for 5th Grade. • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire for 6th – 8th Grades. • 9th -11th Grade – New Credit Card rules and regulations • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire for 12th Grade.

  13. Other Programs/Projects • Junior Achievement • JA will be introduced to all K-5 classes beginning in school year 2010-2011. Elementary teachers have endorsed the idea and 1st , 2nd, and 3rd grades facilitated one-off programs in individual classrooms this past school year. This program requires volunteer instructors (parents, community members, business professionals) to facilitate 5 lessons throughout school year, focusing on economics and entrepreneurship. • HS Personal Finance class • Has been approved as a required class for all 9th – 12th grade students beginning in school year 2010-2011. • Integration of financial literacy topics/lessons to also be integrated in HS Economics, Math, Social Studies/History.

Other Programs/Projects • Middle School Financial Literacy Exploratory Classes: • 6th grade program established. • Will be available for all 7th grade students beginning in school year 2010-2011 and 8th grade students in 2011-2012. • 6 week focus on age appropriate financial literacy and economics lessons. • In-School Bank: • Will open in September 2010 and serve 2nd – 5th grade students. • Project team at TS Bank has been created to assist in implementation. • Will be a deposit –only bank and completely facilitated by Treynor students.

  15. Other Programs/Projects • 5th Grade students will serve as student Client Service Representatives. Recent year 4th Grade students were presented with CSR opportunity and 45 students submitted applications for 12 CSR positions. Candidates were interviewed and positions were awarded in March. CSR training was conducted in May and will also occur in August. • Treynor Schools has allocated a specific classroom to host the elementary bank. In addition to the banking center, TS Bank has donated computers to support an additional computer lab to be used for financial literacy lessons. • An initial student assembly will be held on 9/1 and will introduce the bank to 2nd – 5th grade students. • Formal opening to occur 9/14-15 and include ribbon cutting ceremony and opportunity for media promotion.

Other Programs/Projects • After School Program: • The Stock Market Game • Grades 4-12 can participate • Will implement in 2010-2011 at elementary school computer lab for 4th - 5th grade • Will implement in MS/HS labs for 6th – 12th grade • Iowa Association of Business and Industry: • Business Horizons July 25th – 30th. • TS Bank to serve in an advisory role in week long event to promote student entrepreneurship • Grocery Store: • The Personal Finance class will assist in resurrecting the community grocery store. Students will assist in managing the facility and perform strategic and tactical tasks.

  17. Teacher/Student Surveys • Surveys: • All Treynor teachers completed competency and teaching level assessments in November 2009 for financial literacy. The results of this assessment have provided direction to facilitate teacher workshops and training sessions that will ensure successful teaching of financial literacy topics. • Student assessments were administered by Ednalysis in late May. 135 9th – 12th grade students participated and this data will establish our baseline in order to measure success moving forward.

Institute Partnerships • The TS Bank Institute is: • A member of Iowa Jump$tart Coalition for Financial Literacy • Partnering with: • Iowa Bankers Association • Iowa Department of Education • AEA 13 • University of Northern Iowa • University of Nebraska-Omaha • Iowa State University All to provide a robust, comprehensive program for Treynor’s school district that can be replicated throughout the State of Iowa.

What does the future hold? • The sky is the limit! • Word is spreading – other organizations are interested in what we’re doing! • Developing and assisting to implement the model across the region or state. • Potential expansion into Council Bluffs public schools in school year 2010-2011. • Host and facilitate a symposium for educators across the state. • Grant applications for money to fund the man power to roll out to all schools in Pottawattamie county and beyond. • Outside the school system initiatives, i.e. community outreach.
