  2. US in WWII A. EUROPE: War up to 1942 • Remember, war had been ongoing since 1939! 2. The US had been supplying weapons to England and the allies: Cash and Carry Lend Lease Act

  3. US in WWII 3. Battle of the Atlantic a. One of the first US actions was to establish control over shipping in the Atlantic. b. Defeating the axis powers largely relied on controlling the seas. 1. We needed control to ship troops and supplies to Europe!

  4. US in WWII c. U-Boats (Untersea) 1. German submarines 2. Very aggressive and successful at sinking shipping liners 3. Wolfpacks- groups of U- boats, mostly hunting at night.

  5. US in WWII 4. 360 American ships sunk after German declared war on the US! 5. Convoy system- The US revisited a WWI technique of sending armed naval ships and planes with the supply ships.

  6. US in WWII 4. Enigma machine a. Allies broke the German secret codes. b. Used to find U-boats and German troop buildups. c. Due to this machine, the Allies gained control of the Atlantic in a short time.

Invades Russia in 1941, creating a two-front European war! ** Russia is credited with truly winning the war. b. These two fronts (West with England and East with Russia) enabled the Allies to focus on Africa and Italy.
