The bear has no natural enemies, except for the humans and their illegal or strenuous activities. It has a full-bodied physique, triangular head, round ears and small eyes. The destruction of its habitat and the hunting (which was banned only two decades ago), are the main causes of its gradual disappearance from most of the countries. Today it lives in small, detached populations and is in danger of extinction. The bear’s population in Greece is one of the largest in the European Union. The bear is the largest terrestrial (land), suckling animal (mammal) in Europe. It usually lives about 20 to 25 years.
