The Problem Identified • Results of surveys have shown: • 60% of Americans can’t name even five of the Ten Commandments • 82% of Americans believe “God helps those who help themselves” is a Bible verse • 12% of adults believe that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife • 50% of graduating high school seniors thought that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife

  3. The Cancer Of Biblical Illiteracy • It’s effects are frightening (Hos. 4:1-6) • It is the ruination of churches • Leads to a lack of teachers (Heb. 5:12) • Churches become fertile ground for false doctrine (Eph. 4:14)

  4. It is the ruination of churches • Leads to a lack of teachers (Heb. 5:12) • Churches are doomed when members, being Biblically illiterate become a “seed-bed” for false teachers and are blown about by every wind of doctrine (Eph. 4:14)

Morality suffers when no attention is paid to God’s word • The world’s standards call for an acceptance of wholesale evil and wickedness • Good becomes evil and evil becomes good (Isa. 5:20) • Biblically illiteracy allows for a morality where “everyone does what is right in his own eyes” (Jgs. 21:25)

  6. There Is A Solution • The most obvious place to begin is with the Bible itself • We are able to make choices that will affect our salvation (Rom. 6:16)

Diligence is necessary (2 Tim. 2:15) • KJV - “Study”; NKJV, ASV, NASB, - “Give Diligence” or “Be diligent” • What does the original word mean? • Strong says, “to use speed, i.e., to make effort, be prompt or earnest” • Thayer says, “to exert one’s self, endeavour, give diligence” • Do we see the importance of this? • Can one be approved without it? • Is there diligence when there is negligence? • How much diligence is in illiteracy? • How diligent am I?

  8. Availing ourselves of opportunities for collective edification (Heb. 3:12-14; 10:24-25) • This would include times when the church comes together • Special occasions such as Gospel meetings • The apostles saw their own shortcoming (Lk. 17:5) • Can we see ours? • We cannot increase our faith by being Biblically illiterate (Rom. 10:17)
