  3. What Do You Know? Unfortunately, most of you have probably heard herpes jokes during the length of your high school career. People who have herpes are dirty and have a lot of unprotected sex, right? WRONG. http://www.ryedalett.net/question_marks.jpg

  7. Sneaky Virus? There are more people who have the herpes simplex virus who do are not aware of the infection than there are people who have the virus who are aware of the infection. This virus is just capable of lying dormant for long periods of time—or forever, for that matter. Some people never know they are infected until they pass it on to another person.

Lifelong Changes http://www.drugs.com/images/pills/mmx/t106521f/valtrex.jpg If the patient has had an outbreak, they have most likely been prescribed Valtrex or something similar in order to fight it off. If outbreaks are frequent enough, say, every two months, the patient can request to be put on Valtrex once daily for as long as needed. Once daily, Valtrex can reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

  11. Lifelong Changes (Cont'd) Along with dealing with lifelong changes such as medication and prevention, there are also many other changes to the patient’s life which vary from person to person. It all depends on how the patient handles the infection—either they take what they get and deal with it, or they have a hard time coping. Here are some other things patients must deal with: • Possible initial embarrassment • Avoiding sexual relations • Psychological distress • Painful recurrences • Possible transmission from pregnant mother to baby • Susceptibility to HIV • Fear of cold sores being seen by others
