Tuition and Young Physician Indebtedness • Medical school tuition growth (1984-2004, Median tuition and fees) • 165% increase for privatemedical schools • 312% increase for public medical schools • Medical student debt growth (1984-2006, Median debt level) • Public Medical School Students • $22,000in 1984 • $120,000in 2006 • Private Medical School Students • $27,000in 1984 • $160,000 in 2006

  4. Five Extramural LRPs • Clinical Research • Pediatric Research • Health Disparities Research • Contraception and Infertility Research • Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds

  5. LRP Benefits and Terms Benefits • Up to $35,000 per year in loan repayments, depending on debt level • Reimbursement of Federal, state, and local taxes resulting from NIH loan repayment • LRP awards are portable and can be transferred Terms • Initial: 2 years • Renewal Options: 1 and 2 years

Eligibility • Doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) • Funding for research at anydomestic nonprofit, university, or government organization • Educational loan debt equal to at least 20% of your annual salary • Conduct research for an average of 20 hours/week • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident *NIH grant or award support NOT required*

  7. Qualifying Loans and Repayment • NIH will repay: • Educational loans backed by the U.S. Government • Educational loans from accredited U.S. academic institutions and commercial lenders • Note: Full-time NIH employees are eligible for Intramural LRPs
