1. “Tu Bishvat”- The nature holiday Dalia Zisman class Austin JCC-TX Engaging the following topics: Taking care of our planet-Save this world for a better future Environmental awareness Jewish values like: Tikkun Olam-Repairing/healing the world, Bal Tashchit – Don’t destroy needlessly, Brit (Our partnership with God), L’dor Vador (from generation to generation) or L’ovda U’lshomrah(to work and keep the land). Teaching two Mishnas from Pirkey Avot: Rabbi Ben Azzai Mishnah: “Do not be scornful of any person… or anything, for you have no person without his hour… no thing without its place.” (Chapter 4, Mishnah 3) Everything matters and everything counts and has a purpose and a place in God’s world. Our actions are very important too. The other mishnah is from Rabbi Hillel: “Do not separate yourself from the community” (Chapter 2, Mishnah 5) עברית בשקופית הבאה

2. טו -בשבט- חג לטבע בכתה של דליה זיסמן במרכז היהודי באוסטין -טקסס Dalia’s class Austin JCC-TX יחידת הלימוד כללה: שמירה על העולם למען עתיד טוב יותר מודעות לאיכות הסביבה ערכים יהודים כמו: תיקון עולם-ריפוי העולם בל תשחית-אל תהרוס לשווא ברית עולם – עם הקדוש ברוך הוא לדור ודוראו "לעובדה ולשומרה" לימוד שתי משניות מפרקי אבות : משנתו של רבי בן עזיה:"אל תהי בז לכל אדם, ואל תהי מפליג לכל דבר, שאין לך אדם שאין לו שעה, ואין לך דבר שאין לו מקום" (פרק 4 משנה 3( משנתו של רבי הלל: הילל אומר: "אל תפרוש מן הציבור..." (פרק 2 משנה 5)

3. Our learning in class started with a unit about recycling. Our families were very involved and participated with their children by bringing recyclables to class every day. The children sorted them to 3 special bins and learned about each material they were made of. התחלנו בנושא המחזור. משפחות הילדים היו מאוד מעורבות ושלחו עם ילדיהם מידי יום,מוצרים שאפשר למחזר. הילדים מיינו אותם ל-3 פחים על פי החומרים מהם הם עשויים

4. We learned that everything matters, everything counts even trash. We got familiar with the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We learned to reduce the amount of paper that we are using by drawing on both side of the paper. We reused paper towel tubes, cups and lids and old CD’s to decorate our classroom למדנו שלכל דבר יש חשיבות ואפילו לאשפה. הכרנו את 3 ה R – להפחית, להשתמש שוב ולמחזר למדנו להקטין את כמות הנייר בה אנו משתמשים והתחלנו לצייר משני צידי הדף. השתמשנו שוב בגלילי מגבות הנייר, בכוסות ואפילו בדיסקים ישנים המקשטים את הכתה שלנו

6. למדנו שלכל מה שאנו עושים בחיי היום יום יש השפעה על העולם. ערכנו ניסוי סביבתי: דברנו על הנהרות והאגמים ועל חשיבות המים שלהם לקיום חיי האדם לקחנו מיכל מלא מים נקיים וזיהמנו את המים ע"י זריקת לכלוך לתוכם, חצץ, שמן (הוא סימן את הרעלים) שקיות פלסטיק, מזון ועוד סוגי אשפה- פוי, מגעיל! We learned that our actions matter and what we do on a daily basis impact our world. We did an environmental experience in class to understand the consequences of our actions. We talked about the lakes and the rivers and the clean water in them that sustain human life. We took a container full of clear, clean water. Then we did our “best” to pollute the water by throwing in dirt, gravel, oil (to stand for toxic oil spills), trash-plastic packaging, food and any other kind of trash. Yuck! Yuck!

8. Now came the hard part: what can we do to reverse our actions and UN-pollute the water? We tried and we tried, we were even willing to put our hands inside to pull out the trash. כעת הגיע החלק הקשה: מה אפשר לעשות כדי לתקן את מה שעשינו ולנקות את המים? נסינו וניסינו ואפילו היינו מוכנים לזהם ידינו ולהוציא מהמים את האשפה

9. Unfortunately we could not get the water to be clean again. What a lesson was that. The children said: People can get sick from polluted water and animal can die. We also read a story about a turtle that got very sick because people threw a plastic bag to the water. The poor turtle thought it is a jelly fish. Every act matter! לרוע המזל לא הצלחנו לחזור ולנקות את המים וזה היה שיעור לחיים! הילדים אמרו שאנשים יכולים לחלות ממים מזוהמים וחיות יכולות למות קראנו בנוסף סיפור על צב שנהיה מאוד חולה כי אנשים זרקו שקיות פלסטיק למים. הצב המסכן חשב שזו מדוזה !

10. As part of Tikkun Olam and our helpful actions to save our world we had a bake sale in our school. This was a community effort (…don’t separate yourself from the community, said Rabbi Hillel), to raise money to the local recycling center. כחלק מתיקון העולם והעזרה שלנו לשמור על העולם, ערכנו יריד לממכר עוגות בבית ספרנו. זה היה מאמץ קהילתי("אל תפרוש מהקהילה" אמר רבי הלל) לאיסוף כספים למרכז המיחזור המקומי

12. We went on a field trip to Ecology Action recycling center and we learned about their important job. נסענו למרכז המיחזור האקולוגי ולמדנו על חשיבות עבודתם

13. Every child took things to recycle at the center. We carried them in our recycled T-shirt bag (great idea that came from Maia - Israel). כל ילד לקח עימו דברים למחזר במרכז המיחזור. סחבנו אותם בתיק החולצה הממוחזרת (רעיון אדיר שהגיע ממאיה משבי ציון בישראל)

15. We gave them the $690 that our bake sale and our Tzedakkah boxes made and we felt very happy and proud, we also had a great fun at the recycling center. ,הענקנו להם את 690 הדולר שאספנו ביריד העוגות ומקופות הצדקה שלנו והרגשנו מאושרים וגאים. כמו כן נהנינו מאוד במרכז המיחזור

16. מכיוון שזה היה טו בשבט, תרמנו חלק מהכסף לנטיעת עצים בהר הכרמל. אנחנו נקבל תעודה בדואר וייטעו עצים על שמנו כמו כן למדנו על העץ והעצים ועבדנו בשולחן לעיבוד עץ (אמיתי עם כלים אמיתיים ובטוחים) Because it was Tu BiShevat we took some of the money we had and donated it to JNF for planting a tree on Mount Carmel. We will get a certificate in the mail and a tree named after us. More things we did before Tu BiShevat were to learn about wood and trees. We had a real woodworking table with real tools in our class (safety first of course)

17. The Dolphin class made edible trees: vegetables with ranch dressing as “glue” כתת "דולפין" הכינה עצים אכילים: ירקות עם רוטב ששימש כדבק

18. Bear class made almond trees with popcorn that they painted pink.כתת "הדובים" הכינה עצי שקדייה מפופקורן שצבעו אותו בוורוד

19. They also used their hands to create treesהם גם השתמשו בידיהם בכדי ליצור עצים
