  2. The SWBAT get to know the teacher/students and what the class is all about. 8-26/27-19 • Give you expectations and answer questions about class • Get to know each other(activities) • Go over syllabus and materials needed • Go over class web site • Seating chart • Logistical stuff

  3. On a half sheet of paper, answer the following questions. Please do not put your name on the paper. I will collect and read some of the answers to the class • What do you most like about school? Least like? • What is your first impression of the teacher? (Be honest.) • What are your first impressions of the students in here? • What do you think Cornerstones class is? • What are your expectations for this class? • What is your biggest pet peeve that teachers do? • What is your biggest obstacle in being successful in school? • What job would you like to have in your future? • Do you feel phones get in the way of learning at school? Why or Why not? • Do you feel homework is important to learning in school. Why or why not?

  4. What to expect from me • I will work hard to make the class interesting, fun, and informative. • I like to laugh, especially at myself because I can be sort of goofy. • I am not above, or smarter than you I just have more experience. • I want you to look forward to coming to this class. • I want to help you make your freshman year a great experience. • I want you to learn about life in this class that will affect you for the rest of high school and into college and adulthood.

The students will learn about each other and get an idea what is expected to be successful 8-28/29-19 • Bell Ringer #1 • Finish up syllabus on things like logistics, fire drills, lock downs, etc. • Go over class web site. • Video over things successful people do every single day • Ten things you can control in life/school. Compare your list with a group of others. Groups of four. Also write down three great things you did this summer that was awesome that you want to share. • Interview a partner from list of questions I give you.

  6. Bell Ringer #1 for 8-28/29-19 • What are you most excited about in starting High School? • What are you most worried about? • How can you make the most out of the experience?

  7. Always remember control what you can control. List 10 things you can control

  8. TEN Things You Have Complete Control Over in Life • Being on time ( at least 90% of the time) 8. Coachable • Work ethic 9. Doing extra • Effort 10. Being prepared • Body Language • Energy • Attitude (Be nice) • Passion

  9. How Can you get better • Out of the 10 things that you control list three that you feel you need to improve on. How are you going to improve on these things. Short paragraph on each.

  10. Interview procedure • From the list of questions ask your partner 8-10 of them and write the answers down. You will introduce your partner and share these answers with the class in the next class period.

The Students will learn how to Reflect on things that lead to success in life 8-30/9-3-19 • Bel Ringer #2 : Video clip Sony Did you know and discussion • How can you improve on three of the ten things you can control. Make sure this is done. • Complete partner interviews and present to the class • Possibly begin the feel good assignment.

  12. Easy First Assignment • List the ten things you can control. • Pick three of them and state how you can improve on them personally. • Include the answers to your interview questions that you did with your partner.

  13. The Students will reflect on how they feel about others and themselves in their writing 9-4/5-19 • Bell Ringer #3 and discussion • Video clip over positive vs. negative mindset. Ted Talks • Write down three positive things about three people you really don’t know that well. I will read these to the class. Be specific about the positive things you write about each person please. • Letter to yourself. Time capsule.

  14. Bell Ringer #3 for 9-4 and 9-5-19 • In general do you feel most people focus on the negative things in life and the negative things they do, or do they focus on the positive? Why? • How can we be more positive about what we do each day?

The Student will better understand how to take notes that will benefit them in the classroom. 9-6/9-19 • Bell Ringer #4 • Finish feel Good Stuff from last class • Cornell (Focus) notes presentation • Video clip on notetaking • Letter to yourself. • Read introduction to 7 Habits and take Cornell notes over it?

  16. Bell Ringer #4 for 9-6/9-19 • Do you feel like you take good notes in school? Do you think notes are important to success in school? Why or why not? Do you have a specific method for taking notes and why does it work for you? Would you like to learn to take better notes? • Read Who am I to the students from 7 Habits.

The Student will learn to Better understand Themselves by thinking about career and life goals they want for themselves and what obstacles may be there for them. 9-10/11-19 • Bell Ringer #5 • Four Corners on Focus notes • Read introduction to 7 Habits (pg. 13-27) and write one page of focus notes over the material. Quiz next class over this material. • Finish Letter to yourself, show teacher for grade, and put in envelope and address it with name, class, graduation date, and today’s date. • Start Personality Shield

  18. Bell Ringer #5 for 9-10/11-19 Tell me anything you know about 9-11-2001. How do you think it changed America and the way we live?

The student will learn about gaining skills like notes, vocabulary, goals, reading, writing, etc. that will help them in school and beyond. 9-12/13-19 • Bell Ringer #6 and discussion • Quiz over pg. 13-27 over introduction of 7 Habits of Effective Teens. • Vocabulary Pre Test • Shield drawing. Needs to have drawings and be colored. • Finish up any assignment from last week. (letter to yourself, Focus notes over reading. etc)

  20. Bell Ringer #6 for 9-12/13-19 • After two weeks of school and taking part in your classes what do you feel your final Grade Point Average will be for this semester. Why? How will you make this happen? Let’s see how close we can come to the actual one at the end of the semester. • Write it down and check back later.

  21. The student will learn how to better understand how to properly set goals that may work for them 9-16/17-19 • Bell Ringer #7 • Motivational movie video clips • Notes on Smart goals • Shield. Must have pictures and be colored. • Go over instructions on shield essay they are to write. Must be typed. • All work needs to be completed and turned in today from the past week. This includes focus notes, letter to yourself, quiz.

  22. Bell Ringer #7 for 9-16/17-19 • Do you feel setting goals are important in life? Why or Why not? Have you set goals and have they worked? Why or Why not?

The Students will learn to understand what it means to set goals and practice writing an essay based on what they would like to do with their life. 9-18/19-19 • Bell Ringer #8 • Motivational movie clip(s) Dream! • Read pages 31 to 44 in 7 Habits if we have time • Write down 3 facts from the reading on the back of your shield to possibly share later. If we have time. • Work on Life Shield and shield essay individually. Due next class.

  24. Bell Ringer #8 for 9-18/19-19 • What do you like most about the school year so far? Why? • What do you like least about the school year so far? Why?

  25. The students will Think about their life’s goals while learning to organize their thoughts on paper in a short essay. 9-20/23-19 • Bell Ringer #9 and discussion (from the dream video clip last class) • Inspirational movie video clips (Balboa and other videos • Finish shield and typed shield essay. DUE TODAY! • Read pages 31 to 44 in 7 Habits if we have time • Write down 3 pieces of information from the reading on the back of your shield. Give a fact and an example from the information you write down. At least two sentences for each. You should have six things total on your paper. • Notes over Reactive vs. Proactive? Might not get to this.

  26. Bell Ringer #9 for 9-20 and 9-23-19 Someone’s opinion of you does not have to be your reality. Please explain this and do you believe this to be true? Is this easy, or not easy to do? Why?

The SWBAT understand the importance of being proactive in life by reading the 7 habits and getting involved both individually and in group activities associated with this chapter. 9-24/25-19 • Bell Ringer #10 and discussion (2 parts) • Read chapter 1 in 7 Habits (pg. 48-70) as a class and individually • Answer 1/2 questions from worksheet. Teach a partner the other half. • Notes over Reactive vs. Proactive? • Video clip over proactive vs reactive behavior. • Preview reactive vs. proactive skits • Shield Essay and Shield is due and going in gradebook. (Papers I read were great)

Reactive in Dealing with situations. 9-26-27-19 • Bell Ringer #11 and discussion • Finish Reading chapter 1and complete worksheet in 7 habits • Video clip over proactive/reactive • Get into groups of 2-4 and practice our skits. We can start them today. • Practice 15 vocabulary words

Students will also practice vocabulary skills. • Bell Ringer #12 and discussion • Learning outcomes vocabulary practice (hand out vocabulary sheets beforehand) • Study with a partner the first 15 words on the back side. • Learning inventory and short write up with results of what you come up with. • Video Clip over how to influence people • Hand in 12 (36 points) bell ringers and notebook individually to the teacher. • Begin reading chapter 2 of 7 habits if we have time

  35. Bell Ringer # for September “What does influence mean? Who has influenced you? How do you feel about that person? Have you ever influenced anyone? Do you think you had a positive or negative influence on him/her? Why?”

  36. Learning Style • Write a short ½ page response where you answer the following questions about the learning style inventory you took. Should be a couple of paragraphs. • Did the overall profile describe the way you learn. Why or why not? • Explain your receptive style, social style, and expressive style of learning. • Could this help you in picking classes for the future and maybe even a possible career path to follow? How?

(Review beforehand) • Begin reading chapter 2 (pg. 73) of 7 Habits begin with and end in mind. • Students will write down 7 questions from the reading for a partner to answer.

  41. Bell Ringer #3 for 10-3 and 10 • Give me your take on the quote below by Abe Lincoln. “ People are just about as happy as they make their minds up to be” • Make up your own quote that has to do with the chapter on being proactive.

What to have in your binder • Zipper pouch with pens, pencils • Paper • Planner/agenda that is filled out • Dividers • Organized and neat • Cornell notes are being taken or at least tried to be taken. Notes should be there. • My class you should have all the bell ringers. They are 3 points each.
