  1. Propitiation for Sins 1 John 2:1, 2

  2. Propitiation for Sins • Introduction. A. Related to the word “mercy or propitious”. Luke 18:13, “God be merciful (propitious) to me, a sinner.” Propitious = kind, favorable, merciful.

  3. Propitiation for Sins • B. “Propitiation” = “an expiation, a means whereby sin is covered and remitted” (Vine). In the OT – expiation or atonement; in the NT – propitiation. The same thing.

  4. Propitiation for Sins • C. Romans 3:25, “whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness.”

  5. Propitiation for Sins • The all-important question: How can God be just and justify the sinner? Sacrifice of Christ (divine part); faith + obedience (human part).

  6. Propitiation for Sins • In that way God can show His mercy, forgiving sin; that is, Christ makes it possible. We accept and receive it!

  7. Propitiation for Sins • D. Purpose: Reconciliation with God. Sin separates us from God. Atonement is to RESTORE unity or union with God, 2 Cor. 5:18, 19.

  8. Propitiation for Sins • I. Sin produces wrath, which must be appeased in order to bring about peace and reconciliation.

  9. Propitiation for Sins • Genesis 32:20, Jacob offended Esau. Later he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."

  10. Propitiation for Sins • Exodus 32:30, “You have committed a great sin (worshipped the golden calf). So now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Intercession.

  11. Propitiation for Sins • Numbers 16:41-48, Wrath of God because the people murmured against His judgment upon the rebels. Aaron made atonement burning incense.

  12. Propitiation for Sins • Numbers 25:4, 13, Wrath of God upon fornication, idolatry. Phineas made atonement, entered tent of Israelite and his Midianite woman, pierced them through the belly with a spear.

  13. Propitiation for Sins • II. Sacrifice of animals = atonement. Leviticus 1:4, “Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.”

  14. Propitiation for Sins • Leviticus 4:35, “So the priest shall make atonement for his sin that he has committed, and it shall be forgiven him.”

  15. Propitiation for Sins • Leviticus 16:34, “Now you shall have this as a permanent statute, to make atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once every year.“ The Day of Atonement.

  16. Propitiation for Sins • III. Christ, the propitiation for our sins. The sacrifices under the law of Moses were as a “shadow” or “type” of the only sacrifice that takes away sin.

  17. Propitiation for Sins • Isaiah 53:10, “When You make His soul an offering for sin”. Acts 8:34, “of whom does the prophet say this?” 35 “he preached Jesus to him.”

  18. Propitiation for Sins • This means that because of the sacrifice of Christ and our obedience, God can show mercy and forgive us. The eunuch understood this and wanted to be baptized.

  19. Propitiation for Sins • In this way, instead of enmity there is reconciliation with God (Colossians 1:21). Now there is friendship instead of enmity. 2 Cor. 5:18-21.

  20. Propitiation for Sins • Isaiah 53:5, “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace (that brought us peace) was upon Him.”

  21. Propitiation for Sins • 1 Peter 2:24, “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness -- by whose stripes you were healed.”

  22. Propitiation for Sins • Romans 4:7, sins covered (propitiated) by means of the sacrifice of Christ. Psalm 32:1 Blessed is the person whose sin is covered.

  23. Propitiation for Sins • IV. Christ, the ONLY way to escape the wrath of God. Romans 5:1, “having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through… Jesus Christ.”

  24. Propitiation for Sins • But for those who do not obey the gospel of Christ, the Bible does not promise peace nor grace nor mercy, neither now nor in the Day of Judgment. John 14:6.

  25. Propitiation for Sins • Those who do not obey the gospel are still under the wrath of God. 1 Peter 4:17; 2 Thessalonians 1:7, 8. AS IF JESUS HAD NOT DIED.

  26. Propitiation for Sins • V. God is still the God of wrath. Romans 2:4-10, “you are storing up wrath for yourself… indignation and wrath unto them that do not obey the truth.” NT. His love, His gift, REJECTED as if worthless!

  27. Propitiation for Sins • Hebrews 10:31, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God; 12:29, for our God is a consuming fire.” This is in the NEW Testament!

  28. Propitiation for Sins • Conclusion. Remember that all sin provokes God, makes Him furious… and that Christ is the ONLY propitiation for sins, the ONLY one that makes God merciful.

  29. Propitiation for Sins • God hates all sin: to Him it is like a dirty garment, like the corruption of a dead body, like vomit…

  30. Propitiation for Sins • Every sin enslaves, contaminates, hurts and destroys. For men more and more sin is just a joke, but for God it’s detestable, abominable

  31. Propitiation for Sins • Then, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” Hebrews 2:3.
