  3. Why do people create poems? • Remembering events (historical) • To give their views on an controversial issue • To discuss an aspect of the society they live in • To talk about their culture • To “teach” about their own lives/experiences

  4. Limerick …. definition • A limerick is a form of nonsense verse with a strict rhyme scheme (aabba). • You can write a limerick about anything and you can make it as silly or as funny as you want!

  9. Haiku….Definition • This is a traditional Japanese verse-form. It consists of three lines, which together add up to seventeen syllables (sounds or taps). • The first five lines contain five syllables, the second line has seven and the third line has five

  10. Haiku • A haiku is described as a short SNAPSHOT poem, which captures a particular moment or feeling.

  13. Onomatopoeia • Onomatopoeia is the use of sound words. Words that sound like the things they describe. Poets often use onomatopoeia.

  17. Similes • When we use a simile we say that one thing is like or as something else. We all use similes without realising it. He’s as thick as two short planks. She’s got a face like the back of a bus. She’s as fat as a pig.

  19. Alliteration Alliteration is the repetition of letters and sounds for effect. It is often used by authors and poets. The effect can be: spooky – the silver spider slowly slided towards her. funny – oh buzz off you big, blue faced baboon.
