Health and Wellbeing • Health is a personal, social and economic good and a major asset for society • Wellbeing reflects quality of life and concept of positive mental health • Good or bad health outcomes • Depend on action or inaction of other sectors • Affect outcomes of a wide range of sectors

  3. Social Determinants of Health • Circumstances in which people are born, live, work, play and age • “The causes of the causes” • Not exclusive to health – poverty – a key determinant for poor education outcomes

  4. Social Determinants of Health • Health sector cannot deal with these alone • Other sectors “do health” under different labels but often don’t recognise this as core business • Health sector needs to learn how to “read” labels

  5. Health in all Policies (HiAP) – Promoting Healthy Public Policy • Way of working across government • Encourages all sectors to consider health impacts of policies and practices • Examines contribution a healthier population can make towards achieving the goals of other sectors

Vision A country where everyone can enjoy physical and mental health & wellbeing to their full potential, where wellbeing is valued and supported at every level of society and is everyone’s responsibility Goals: Increase the proportion of people who are healthy at all stages of life   Reduce health inequalities  Protect the public from threats to health and wellbeing Create an environment where every individual and sector of society can play their part in achieving a healthy Ireland
