  4. MALE AND FEMALE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD • GEN 1-2

  5. DEFINITIONS • EGALITARIANISM – Men and women are created equal and should have the same rights and opportunities. We should share identical authority and responsibilities in marriage, religion and elsewhere or else men and women are of intrinsically different worth.

  6. DEFINITIONS • COMPLEMENTARIANISM – God has created men and women equal in their essential dignity and human personhood, but different and complementary in function with male headship in the home and in the Church.

  7. DEFINITIONS • MALE HEADSHIP – In the partnership of two spiritually equal human beings, man and woman, the man bears the primary responsibility to lead the partnership in a God-glorifying direction.

  8. DEFINITIONS • MALE DOMINATION - The antithesis to male headship is male domination which is the assertion of man’s will over the woman’s will heedless of her spiritual equality, her rights, and her value.

  9. QUOTE God’s gift of complementary manhood and womanhood was exhilarating from the beginning (Gen. 2:23). It is precious and beyond estimation. But today it is esteemed lightly and is vanishing like the rain forests we need but don’t love. . . . (John Piper and Wayne Grudem “An overview of Central Concerns: Questions and Answers, p. 60)

  10. QUOTE . . . We believe that what is at stake in human sexuality is the very fabric of life as God wills it to be for the holiness of His people and for their saving mission to the world.” (John Piper and Wayne Grudem “An overview of Central Concerns: Questions and Answers, p. 60)

  11. MALE AND FEMALE ARE EQUAL IN PERFECTION GEN 1:26-27

  12. GEN 1:26 • Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

  13. GEN 1:24 • And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.

  14. GEN 1:26 • Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

  15. GEN 1:27 • So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

  16. QUOTE “Man is unique, finding his identity upward in God and not downward in the animals.” Ray Ortland Jr.. Chapter 3, “Male-Female Equality and Male Headship,” p. 96

  17. GEN 9:6 • "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.

  18. JAM 3:9 • With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness.

  19. PSA 139:14 • I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

  20. MALE AND FEMALE ARE EQUAL IN PARTNERSHIP GEN 1:26-28

  21. GEN 1:26 • Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

  22. GEN 1:28 • God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

  23. GEN 1:29 • Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

  24. MALE AND FEMALE ARE DIFFERENT IN POSITIONS GEN 2:18-25

  25. GEN 2:18 • The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

  26. PSA 33:20 • We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.

  27. PSA 70:5 • Yet I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.

  28. PSA 115:9 • O house of Israel, trust in the LORD-- he is their help and shield.

  29. GEN 2:19 • Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

  30. GEN 2:20 • So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

  31. GEN 2:21 • So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.

  32. GEN 2:22 • Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

  33. GEN 2:23 • The man said, • "This is now bone of my bones • and flesh of my flesh; • she shall be called 'woman,' • for she was taken out of man."

  34. GEN 2:18 • The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

  35. GEN 2:23 • The man said, • "This is now bone of my bones • and flesh of my flesh; • she shall be called 'woman,' • for she was taken out of man."

  36. GEN 2:24 • For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

  37. GEN 2:25 • The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

  38. QUOTE ““While man and woman are to love each other as equals they are not to love in the same way. The man is to love his wife by accepting the primary responsibility of making their partnership platform displaying God’s gory and the woman is to love her husband by supporting him in that godly undertaking.” Ray Ortland Jr.. Chapter 3, “Male-Female Equality and Male Headship,” p. 102
