  7. Abraham’s Call • Abraham was called by God when he lived in a place called Ur to move to a land that was promised to be his. • God promised to make a great nation out of Abraham even though he had no children at the age of 75. “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:2 Practice Quiz Quiz

  8. The covenant • A covenant is an agreement. • After many years, Abraham still had no children. • God spoke again to Abraham, telling him not to be afraid. He would do everything he promised he would do and give him a son. “After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Fear not, Abram; I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’” Genesis 15:1 Quiz Practice Quiz

  9. Abraham questioned God because he did not have any children of his own. • God told Abraham to look at the stars and try to count them. That is how many descendants he would have. “And he brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward the heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.’ And he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’” Genesis 15:5 Quiz Practice Quiz

  10. Abraham believed God. Then God promised to give him a land for his offspring. • Abraham again questioned how God would do this. • God then made a covenant with Abraham. He then sacrificed animals to prove that he would keep his word and give Abraham a son along with land. “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram…” Genesis 15:18 Practice Quiz Quiz

  11. The Sacrifice • After waiting 25 years, God gave Abraham a son: Isaac • One day, God tested Abraham and told him to take Isaac and sacrifice him on a mountain. Abraham obeyed and took Isaac to the mountain. Practice Quiz Quiz “He said, ‘ Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” Genesis 22:2

  12. Abraham took Isaac to Moriah and prepared to sacrifice him. • Before he could, God stopped Abraham. He told him that he knew that Abraham trusted him because Abraham did not disobey God. • Then God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead of his son. • Thus Abraham became the father of Israel. “And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.” Genesis 22:13 Quiz Practice Quiz

  13. The Line Continues • After Isaac had grown older, Abraham sent his servant to his family’s land to get a wife for Isaac. • God directed the servant to a well where he would find Rebekah. • After the servant told Rebekah and her family all that God had done, Rebekah left her family to go and marry Isaac. “Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her…” Genesis 24:67a Practice Quiz Quiz

  14. Isaac’s covenant • There was a famine in the land where Isaac lived. • Because of this, Isaac traveled to a land called Gerarto live. • God appeared to Isaac and told him to not be afraid. He would make a covenant (an agreement) with Isaac like the covenant he made with Abraham. Practice Quiz Quiz “Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.” Genesis 26:3

  15. Isaac’s Mistake • Isaac travelled to Gerar and told Rebekah to lie and say that she was his sister. • Isaac did not trust God and was afraid that the men might kill him in order to have his wife. “When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, ‘She is my sister,’ for he feared to say, ‘My wife,’ thinking, ‘lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,’ because she was attractive in appearance.’” Genesis 26:7 Quiz Practice Quiz

  16. “So Abimelech called Isaac and said, ‘Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, ‘Because I thought, ‘Lest I did because of her.’” Genesis 26:9 • One day, the king of Gerar looked out and saw Isaac and Rebekah laughing. He then knew that they were married. • The king rebuked Isaac and told everyone not to touch Rebekah. • After a while, Isaac became very great and the king told Isaac to leave his land. God then directed him to a place called Beersheba. • Isaac continued the line of Abraham, and in the process, he continued a nation. Practice Quiz Quiz

  17. Quiz Practice Quiz Jacob and Esau • Isaac had two sons: Jacob and Esau • Esau was older and was going to inherit the best of everything from his father. He had what was called a birthright. • A birthright was a status (being the oldest son) and he was going to get the best of everything his father had to offer when his father died. “When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.” Genesis 25:27

  18. One day, Esau came home from hunting and Jacob was cooking stew. • Esau asked Jacob for some stew because he was exhausted. • Jacob said he would give him some stew if he sold him his birthright. • Esau sold him his birthright, which was not a good thing to do. “… So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.” Genesis 25:33 Practice Quiz Quiz

  19. After that, Isaac was very old and about to die. Before he died, he was going to bless his oldest son, Esau. • Jacob disguised himself as Esau and tricked Isaac into giving him the blessing. • After Esau came back from hunting, Isaac realized what had happened but could not change what had happened. • Jacob fled to Haran because Esau wanted to kill him. “As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.” Genesis 27:30 Quiz Practice Quiz

  20. Jacob’s Dream Practice Quiz “And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.” Genesis 28:13 • On Jacob’s way to Haran, he dreamed a strange dream. • He dreamed that there was a ladder going up to heaven and angels were going up and down on it. At the top was God. • God spoke to Jacob and made the same covenant with Jacob that he made with Abraham and Isaac. Quiz

  21. The twelve Tribes • Jacob then went on to Haran and got married. He then had twelve sons. • After many years, he left Haran to go back to his family. • On the way, Jacob was told that Esau was coming out to meet him. Jacob became very afraid that Esau was still angry with him. • The night before he would see Esau, Jacob wrestled a man. He found out that the man was God. After they wrestled, God changed Jacob’s name to Israel. “Then he said, ‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.’” Genesis 32:28 Quiz Practice Quiz

  22. Jacob met Esau the next day, and bowed down to the ground in front of him. • Esau hugged him and was not angry. • Jacob traveled farther and saw Isaac before he died. • His twelve sons would become the twelve tribes of Israel. The nation of Israel was beginning to grow. “And when Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and children, he said ‘Who are these with you?’ Jacob said, ‘The children whom God has graciously given your servant.’” Genesis 33:5 Practice Quiz Quiz
