  1. 10 Tips For Your Quick Response Training (QRT) Grant Shaw Development, LLCMarch 31, 2014

  2. What is the QRT? Quick Response Training (QRT) grants support the job-creation efforts of Florida businesses by helping them provide customized training to new or expanding businesses. Through this customer-driven program, Florida is able to effectively retain and attract businesses creating new, high-quality jobs.

  3. What is the QRT? • The program is structured to be flexible and to "respond quickly" to meet the business’s training objectives. • In FY13 QRT is projected to have assisted FL businesses in creating 4,518 jobs and retaining 2,000 others. Trainees wages increased 36% on average within a year of training.

  4. Program Requirements • Produce an exportable good or service • Create new, full-time, permanent, high-quality jobs • Require customized entry-level skills training of 24 months or less which is not available at the local level • Company MUST match funds (more details on this later)

  5. Funding is on a first-come first serve basis: • Creating high skill/high wage jobs in targeted industries • Offering jobs in the inner city, rural areas, Enterprise Zones (Appendix A) or Brownfield areas • Grant proposals with the greatest potential for economic impact

  6. Reimbursable training expenses: • Instructors’/trainers’ salaries • Curriculum development • Textbooks/manuals

  7. TIPS for YOU!

  8. 10. Work with Edison College! • Edison has experts to help prepare the grant for submission – they are experts and will be the fiscal agent for grant administration • Edison has a lot of training resources available for employers • If Edison doesn’t have it, they will find it! • Edison is flexible – you can even find your own trainers to use

  9. 9. Don’t over-commit • Don’t ask for more money that you can realistically spend – but…. • Don’t commit to add more new hires than you can possibly add in a two year period • Don’t schedule more training than what your company can allow employees to attend

  10. 8. Be Creative • Training options are endless • Training must be specific to your workforce For Example: • Presentation Preparations for Professionals – (using PowerPoint) • Database Applications for Supervisors – ( using Excel) • Frontline Supervisor Training in an Industrial Manufacturing Environment • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing for Manufacturing • NOT COVERED • Travel, equipment, materials/capital improvements, safety training, etc.

  11. 7. Work to your approved plan • Be sure any training you want to conduct falls under the approved list • Just because it was submitted doesn’t mean it was approved • Check your list -- Twice

  12. 6. Plan your work/training • Always be sure that NEW employees (those hired after the effective date of the grant) are in the training class • Keep track of all new hires, and plan for the to participate in training • Schedule training as far in advance as possible, last minute classes are never well attended

  13. 5. The devil is in the details • Keep all documentation organized – letter of agreement, sign in sheets, bills • Learn how to fill out the forms correctly and do it right the first time • Remember to include all teacher prep time and OJT for NEW employees

  14. 4. Stay Organized • Keep a log of what has been submitted and funds are pending • Keep on top of monthly training reports/records – don’t get behind • Keep your eye on the calendar – two years goes by FAST! • ACCURACY is critical

  15. 3. Smaller companies can work together • Option available to form a Training Consortium for grant purposes and apply together • Fill empty seats in a class with people from other companies (no training reimbursement credit applies)

  16. 2. Future plans? • Train for “what’s next” – plan ahead • Software upgrade training? • MS Project? • Quality Enhancements? (Auditor Training, ISO, TS16949 • Team Leader training for future supervisors, or strategic planning/critical thinking for High Potentials

  17. And the #1 Tip… • JUST DO IT! • Check out www.careersourceflorida.com or www.enterpriseflorida.com • Call Adrian Kerr at Edison 239.432.5233 and schedule a meeting!
