  2. A Walk Through the Bible A. Joshua Highlights ● The book of Joshua is a book of military conquests. 1. The first five chapters are about entering the Promised Land.

  3. A Walk Through the Bible 2. Chapters 6-12 are about overcoming the land. 3. Chapters 13-24 deal with the occupation of the land.

  4. A Walk Through the Bible ● Joshua is commissioned by God 1. God reaffirms the promise he gave Moses to Joshua. 2. The command is issued to cross the Jordan river.

  5. A Walk Through the Bible ● Crossing the Jordan 1. Two spies were sent ahead into Jericho to view the situation.

  6. A Walk Through the Bible a. They were hidden in the house of Rahab. b. Rahab informed the spies that the people were afraid of the Israelites. c. Rahab assisted the spies in their escape from the city and was promised she would be spared.

  7. A Walk Through the Bible ● After the spies returned the people were told to assemble for the crossing of the Jordan. 1. The Ark of the Covenant would lead the way.

  8. A Walk Through the Bible 2. The water did not part until the priests placed their feet in the river. a. It took faith to take that step. b. The step of obedience always precedes revelation.

  9. A Walk Through the Bible 3. The priests bearing the ark remained in the river until all had passed. 4. Two monuments of 12 stones each were erected. a. One in the middle of the river and one on the river’s edge.

  10. A Walk Through the Bible ● While wandering in the desert the Israelites had not been circumcised. 1. Joshua had all the males circumcised at Gilgal.

  11. A Walk Through the Bible ● Passover was celebrated for only the second time since leaving Egypt.

  12. A Walk Through the Bible 1. The day after Passover they ate the produce of the land. 2. Manna ceased on the day they ate the produce.

  13. A Walk Through the Bible ● Outside of Jericho Joshua encounters a warrior with his sword drawn.

  14. A Walk Through the Bible 1. Joshua challenges the warrior. a. Are you for us or our enemies? b. He replies “I am the captain of the Lord’s host”.

  15. A Walk Through the Bible c. He tells Joshua to “Take off his shoes, he is on holy ground”. d.Who could this fellow be?

  16. A Walk Through the Bible e.Remember angels do not allow themselves to be worshiped! 2. Joshua remembers that phrase from Mt. Sinai when God said it to Moses!

  17. A Walk Through the Bible ● Who really fought the battle of Jericho? Not Joshua. It was the captain of the Lord’s host!! ● God gives Joshua the battle plan.

  18. A Walk Through the Bible 1. They were told to march around the city once a day for 6 days. 2. Then they were to march around the city seven times on the seventh day. (note: there was no rest on the seventh day)

  19. A Walk Through the Bible 3. The seventh day they were to blow the trumpets and shout and make the walls fall. 4. They were given instructions to kill all the inhabitants but spare Rahab and her family for helping the spies.

  20. A Walk Through the Bible 5. Note: The Ark carried by the priests was to lead the march around Jericho, contrary to Levitical law. 6. They were also given specific instructions to NOT take any spoils of war.

  21. A Walk Through the Bible 7. They were allowed to keep the silver and gold along with vessels of iron and bronze. These items were added to the treasury.

  22. A Walk Through the Bible ● The next battle was not as successful – Israel gets clobbered at Ai. 1. Israel sends 3 thousand men to take the city of Ai.

  23. A Walk Through the Bible 2. The men of Ai win the battle and kill 36 men of Israel. 3. Joshua is discouraged and seeks the Lord.

  24. A Walk Through the Bible 4. God reveals the sin of Israel that a man named Achan had taken some forbidden loot from Jericho. 5. They are told they cannot stand before their enemies until they remove the forbidden loot.

  25. A Walk Through the Bible 6. The penalty for the disobedience is severe. Achan confesses and the items are recovered from his tent. 7. The offenders are stoned to death and everything is burned and buried.

  26. A Walk Through the Bible ● The city of Ai is attacked again with thirty thousand men and the city is wiped out.

  27. A Walk Through the Bible ● Chapter 9 describes the failure with the Gibeonites. 1. The Gibeonites heard how Joshua had destroyed Jericho and Ai.

  28. A Walk Through the Bible a. They disguised themselves and sought a covenant with Israel out of fear of defeat.

  29. A Walk Through the Bible b. Israel failed to consult the Lord and were tricked into a covenant with the Gibeonites. c. After 3 days the deception was discovered. Instead of destroying them, Joshua was forced to let them live because of the covenant.

  30. A Walk Through the Bible d. Joshua announces to the Gibeonites that they would be spared and they would serve as woodcutters and water carriers.

  31. A Walk Through the Bible ● One must remember that when God promised Israel the Land they would have to kill the inhabitants to possess it.

  32. A Walk Through the Bible ● The Longest Day…. 1. Adonai-Zedek king of Jerusalem gathered 5 other kings or rulers to attack the city of Gibeon.

  33. A Walk Through the Bible a. The Gibeonites send for Joshua to help them in the fight. b. God casts down large hailstones that killed more than those that were killed by the sword.

  34. A Walk Through the Bible c. Joshua speaks to the Lord to have the sun stand still until they could complete the victory.

  35. A Walk Through the Bible d. The five kings hide in a cave and Joshua has a large stone placed in front of the cave. e. The five kings were killed and hung on trees until evening.

  36. A Walk Through the Bible ● After the battle of Gibeon the conquest of the south was soon accomplished. ● On the defeat of the northern kings, the entire land was under the control of Israel.

  37. A Walk Through the Bible ● God’s promise to Joshua had been fulfilled that “no man will be able to stand before him”.

  38. A Walk Through the Bible ● The second section of the book covers chapters 12 thru 21. 1. The second section consists of a listing of the enemies.

  39. A Walk Through the Bible 2. The land was apportioned by casting lots. a. This allowed the decision to be according to the divine mind and not according to man’s wisdom.
