Fundamental Principles of NIH Mission is to support the most meritorious research • Peer-review • Breadth and depth of the research community provide a sufficient pool of talent for research directions, and review of applications • Parsimony • Limit support to only the most outstanding proposals

  3. Center for Scientific Review and Program • Over 80,000 applications received by CSR • Grants are assigned to study sections and reviewed by three scientists in a group setting • In review grants receive a score and summary statement are produced • After review funding decisions are made within each institute based on scores and priorities (Program Officers are involved and handle interactions with principal investigators)
