  2. IPAT • I = impact • P = population • A = affluence I = P x A x T • T = technology Looks quantitative, but not really: It’s a conceptual model of the major factors that influence environmental impact

  3. IPAT • P = Population • All else being equal, more people will have a greater impact on the environment • A = Affluence • Generally, the more affluent a society or individual is, the greater the impact on the environment • BUT: affluent societies can afford to mitigate their imact

  4. IPAT • T = Technology • Complicated • Technology can harm the environment, such as a coal-burning power plant. • BUT: a central source of power might be better than every individual home burning wood for heat, light, and cooking • WHY?
