  1. Apollo 11 July 16-24, 1969 • Apollo 11 was the first mission where a human landed on the surface of the moon and returned safely. • While on the moon, the astronauts completed experiments, took photographs, retrieved lunar samples, and won the “Space Race.”

Apollo 11 July 16-24, 1969 Mission Accomplishments and Failures • All of the mission objectives were accomplished. • This mission placed a man on the moon and returned him safely. • They also retrieved lunar rocks. • It accelerated technology development in the United States. • A “surprise” accomplishment was winning the Space Race.

Apollo 11 July 16-24, 1969 • Neil Armstrong – Wapakoneta, Ohio • “Buzz” Aldrin – Montclair, New Jersey • Michael Collins – Rome, Italy • Training • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science, Engineering, Physical Science, or Mathematics. 3 years in a career using one of those skills. • Pass a Class II Space Physical. (Correctable eyesight to 20/20 vision, Blood Pressure 140/90 sitting, Height between 58.5 and 76 inches.)

  4. Apollo 11 July 16-24, 1969 Race Status • With Apollo 11, the United States won the Space Race. • The United States succeeded in putting a man on the moon and returning him safely. The Soviet Union could not compete with this, and gave up the Space Race. • This action put the United States ahead of the Soviet Union technologically. The loss of the Space Race made the Soviets seem inferior to the Americans.
