  1. Project: Re-establishing and improving the experimental VoIP link with the University of Namibia: A Case Study By Ricky Ngandu g07n1084@campus.ru.ac.za Supervisors: Alfredo Terzoli and Mosiuoa Tsietsi Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  2. Background • In 2004 a VoIP link was established between Rhodes University and the University of Namibia • The link had a high packet drop rate due to an inconsistent internet line • Low or no internet bandwidth at the University of Namibia • When a link was established it had a poor voice transmission Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  3. Objectives: • Re-establish VoIP link with the University of Namibia • Improve the bandwidth availability through traffic shaping and quality of service (QoS) • Possibly setup a VoIP based video conferencing facility using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  4. VoIP model Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  5. Approach of Study • Understand the University of Namibia network • Obtain in-depth knowledge on VoIP, methods of enhancing network traffic and understand the implementation process of VoIP • Deploy VoIP • Test live video over a VoIP link using SIP Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  6. Project Challenges For this project to work the following cannot be assumed: • Reliable network • Bandwidth is infinite To ensure that we have a reliable network, there will be a need to negotiate with UNAM’s ISP and UNAM’s computer service department Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  7. Deliverables • Establish a fully working VoIP model • Possibly establish video conferencing • Possibly create a blueprint for connecting African universities together using video and VoIP Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  8. Future work • The last two deliverables are possibilities which may not be completed in this project • Video conferencing is essential for today’s communication needs and should be implemented • Huge expenses are incurred on communication. A cheap solution would be one of the best things to happen to any educational institution’s budget. A blueprint for future implementations would be an asset Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science

  9. Questions • Question and Answer session Rhodes University - Department of Computer Science
