  4. Oratorio • A musical work based on words and stories from the bible • Developed around the same time as opera

  5. Messiah • Is arguably the most well known and loved oratorio • Part 1: tells of the coming of the Messiah • Part 2: Suffering and crucifixion of Jesus • Part 3: Jesus’ resurrection from the dead

  6. Structure of an Oratorio • Recitative Telling the words of the narration with minimal use of music • Aria Solo song that reflects a mood or emotion. Displays the skills of the singer to the full • Chorus Sums up the action of the story at that point. The set work is the chorus to Handel’s Messiah, where he emphasizes the positivity of the mood set in the previous sections

  7. Instrumentation • This chorus is written for SATB choir plus orchestral accompaniment

  8. Key ideas • In this piece, Handel states 4 different ideas and then develops them in various ways • Idea 1 is mainly syllabic and has a stepwise scale ending
