  5. Look at your bubble map again if yours didn’t resemble the first example. • Instead of having similar “grandchild” bubbles under each viewpoint as in the previous example, do you have different “grandchildren” as in the example below? (Look at the yellow ones.) Volunteering Hurt economy Baby Boomers Help economy Increasing health issues Longer lifespans Decreased spending Depletion of Medicare and Social Security Extensive Experience Financial Security Flexible Schedules Retirement Aging Active and Healthy Out of workforce Encore Careers • If your bubble map resembles this one, your outline will be based on the “grandchildren,” as in the example on the next slide. • Here, the Roman Numerals will be the “child” bubbles (the two opposing viewpoints—purple bubbles), the capital letters will be the “grandchildren” (yellow) and the Arabic numerals the “great-grandchildren” (pink).

  7. Now for the thesis. For this position paper, the thesis will be YOUR position on the topic in the center bubble. You have 3 choices: • You agree with the left bubble. • You agree with the right bubble. • You think that sometimes the left bubble is correct and sometimes the right bubble is. (This is a HYBRID thesis, and you must specify the conditions under which each is true.) • Your thesis must: • be a simple sentence (preferably) • be written in third person • be precise and specific. Avoid clichés, metaphors, and words like colorful, interesting, and exciting. • ask to have more said about it. It should demand some proof.

  8. That’s all there is to it! Work on creating your thesis and outline during Writing Workshop time. It will be turned in tomorrow.
