  11. Forums Syndication: Visual Overview

  12. Advanced AI: Moderation Ahead of the Curve • Users are cookied when they post • They see their post, but it’s not visible to others until it passes through multiple filters • 5-10% of all posts are “auto-killed” by advanced algorithms before they’re posted • Profanity: zero tolerance, heated language, gibberish • Spam: drugs, porn, cellphone, etc. • Hacks, XSS • Personal information: phone numbers, SSNs • Repository of banned IPs

  13. Partner Moderation Tools - inline Kill Post View killed posts

  14. Partner Moderation Tools II Easy access to all flagged posts Customizable Profanity list “Show All” feature Hide Thread

  15. Partner Moderation Tools III Roll up of Flagged Posts Alert system sends email to partner when a post is flagged

  16. Partner Moderation Tools IV Profanity list allows Partner to fine-tune the editorial. Selected words are replaced with “****” in the UI

  17. Community Management Support Topix Community Management staff supports additional user moderation: User bans IP bans (in extreme cases) …as well as reporting on weekly and aggregate post counts

  18. Hyper Local Platform

  19. Prototype: Anchorage Daily News • Opportunity: Anchorage Daily News wants a ‘complete’ Alaska news experience but doesn’t have the resources to fund/staff. • Solution: Topix hyper-local platform: • Provide coverage for every town and/or neighborhood in the state. • Aggregate relevant news from up to 60,000 sources. • Support user-generated content from approved ‘community editors’. • Enables discussion with an integrated forum system.

  20. ADN start page • Drop-down menu points to all Alaska Locales • User goes to co-branded page hosted by Topix

  21. Hyper Local – Co-brand • User selects “Kenai” and is taken to co-branded page • Links to ADN and other sources of news categorized to Kenai • User sees “Become an Editor” link • The Topix “RoboBlogger” is currently editing this page. The Topix system crawls over 50,000 sources for news about Kenai and aggregates them here.

  22. Hyper Local – Editor Solicitation • Community Editing process and application are explained to user. • Link to submit application at bottom of page (not visible in screenshot).

  23. Hyper Local - Application • User creates account (if not already registered) and submits application. • Application is reviewed by Topix Community staff for quality and accepted/rejected within 24 hrs.

  24. Hyper Local – Editing Tools I • New Editor receives approval mail, and logs in as “Salmon King”. • Editor Tool button appears in grey header area (see in next slide) • In-line “Edit” and “Kill Story” buttons now appear on page • Note: Community editors can only remove Roboblogger posts, not fellow editor posts. (Admins can remove any post.)

  25. Hyper Local – Editing Tools II • Editor clicks tool button to reveal methods for posting new content to page. • In this case, user selects “The Wire”

  26. Hyper Local – Posting from the Wire • Kenai “Wire” has a wider net of *all* articles Topix has categorized to Kenai. • User decides first article is newsworthy, and clicks the “Post to News” button. • User immediately enters editing flow

  27. Hyper Local – Editing Interface • Editor flow for posting article resembles typical Blog editing interface (e.g. Movable Type) • Form is pre-filled with Headline, link to original article, and text summary. • User has option to format, clarify or add commentary around the Headline and/or text snippet from article. • In this example, user has uploaded a relevant photo from the event (drilling for well water) and given credit to the photographer. • User enters CAPTCHA and submits

  28. Hyper Local – Post Published! • New article is posted to the Kenai news page ! • Note: User sees results immediately because the edit is stored in browser cookie. Result is not visible to public for about 5 to 10 minutes, while Topix system runs profanity, spam, personal info, etc filters against the content. • User can now return to ADN via the header navigation, or continue to post news to the page.

  29. Benefits of Hyper-local Platform • Partner brand becomes destination for complete local coverage • Low-cost, turn-key integration • Product ships “fully-loaded” with AI-selected content • Opportunity to monetize aggregated content • Local forums included
