Euripides Avgoustoglou and Yanns Papageorgiou Abstract We revisit the implementation of the sub-grid scale statistical cloud scheme into the COSMO-model. The sensitivity of the COSMO-model performance is tested to variations of the disposable parameters of the cloud scheme, to changes in the horizontal mesh-size (7 km versus 12 km), and to the inclusion of the cloud ice scheme in combination with the statistical cloud scheme. The focus has been on the low-level clouds over Greece. It is found, among other things, that the inclusion of cloud ice scheme has a significant effect on results.
Balázs Sintai (presented by Pirmin Kaufmann) Abstract The TKE of the COSMO Model can be used as a measure of turbulence for dispersion modelling. This is already done in the current version of the LDPM of DWD. There are however cases, when the TKE produced by the COSMO Model is unrealistically structured. These unrealistic TKE values then lead to unrealistic turbulence parameters for the calculation of the dispersion. In addition, a post-diagnose of the TKE from the meteorological fields can yield to substantially different values than the original prognostic values. The diagnostic TKE values may differ to a much lesser degree, in case the prognostic TKE is turned off in the COSMO Model.
