  2. How did the war begin? • French King Charles died in 1328 with no male heir • 2 men attempted to claim the vacant throne • Edward of England (son-in-law of Charles) • Phillip of Valois, France (Charles’ nephew) • English armies attack France first

  3. How did the nature of European warfare change? • Armor was abandoned for protection as longbows and guns could pierce it. • Cannons could blast through castle walls • Soldiers were hired from peasant class, no longer noble, and kings hired them without oath from lord.

  5. Joan of Arc? • Young French peasant woman who was inspired by God to save France • Convinced Charles VII to let her lead an army against English in 1429 • Helped push the English armies out of France • Was captured, accused of heresy, and burned at the stake in 1431; was sainted in 1922

  6. How did war lead to the end of feudalism? • People became more patriotic to king, less loyal to noble • Monarchs built large armies no longer dependant on lords • Weapons like the longbow and canon made war more deadly increasing the number of people needed to fight in the war.
