  1. The Wonderful Mistake Of Potato Chips By Stevie G.

  2. Americans spend almost $4 billion every year on a treat we know as potato chips. A popular story says they were invented in 1853 in Saratoga Springs, New York. Many wealthy people vacationed at the Carey Moon Lake House in Saratoga Springs and a Native American chef named George Crum worked in the kitchen there.

  3. Option 1 One day chef George Crum was in his kitchen when a lunch rush came because everyone wanted to try the new hamburger. George Crum tried to get every order done and he didn’t want to make his customers angry by waiting too long for there order. At the end of the day, Crum thought of hiring a chef that could help him with the orders. The following Friday, another rush came because the same new burger had a great deal if you bought french fries with the burger. Crum knew what to do. He put his new chef to work. He had to slice six orders of french fries. The new chef had problems seeing and he sliced the fries to thin. Crum was angry but he had to get the orders to the customers right away. Crum was sure the customers would not eat them, instead the customers loved them.

  4. Option 2 One day a customer kept spending his plate of fried potatoes back to the kitchen asking that they be sliced thinner and fried longer. George Crum had a bad temper, and he decided to get even with the complaining diner. He sliced the potatoes very thin, fried them till they were curly chips, and salted them. Certain the guest would hate them, he had the potatoes delivered to the table. To everyone’s surprise, the patron was delighted and asked for more.

  5. Word spread quickly of these crispy potatoes and until the early 1900’s they were known as Saratoga chips after the town where they were introduced. Today over 816 million pounds of potato chips are consumed in the Unite States each year. A total of 3,468 billion pounds of potatoes end up as America’s number one favorite snack food, potato chips.
