  2. The Russian Campaign • Russia was Napoleon’s ally (friend) and had agreed to stop trading with Britain • Russia later refused to follow France’s policies because the Tsar (Russian monarch) didn’t trust Napoleon

  3. The Russian Campaign • Napoleon declared war on Russia • He assembled his largest army in Europe (600,000 soldiers) and marched into Moscow (capital of Russia)

  4. The Russian Campaign • Recall: How did Napoleon motivate his troops to march into Russia?

  5. Arrival in Moscow • Napoleon had hoped that the Russians would surrender • When he arrived he found that Moscow was deserted and the Russians had burned down their own city • Took away Napoleon’s victory!

  6. Defeat due to Russian Winter • On the march back from Moscow napoleon’s troops were starving, demoralized and freezing • Too proud to surrender to the Russians • Picture on page 115

  7. Napoleon abandons his army…again • In December, on the march home, only 9000 of 600,000 soldiers survived • Napoleon abandoned them and went back to France • Napoleon NEVER recovered from this defeat
