  2. Catastrophic Earthquake Devastates Haiti • A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and surrounding area shortly before 5pm Tuesday, January 12 • The earthquake, the most devastating in 200 years, has affected roughly three million men, women and children

Catastrophic Earthquake Devastates Haiti • Widespread damage – including destruction of roads, hospitals, schools and government buildings– are making relief efforts extraordinarily difficult • World Vision has been in Haiti for 30 years and right now there are over 600 World Vision staff on the ground making sure that relief is getting to the people who need it most

Catastrophic Earthquake Devastates Haiti • World Vision had relief items stored in Haiti in preparation for the hurricane season and has already began distributing these supplies • 18 million tons of additional relief supplies will soon be distributed by World Vision staff- with more in the days to come • Supplies include: shelters, blankets, collapsible water containers, hygiene kits and cooking sets

World Vision’s Response to Disasters • The powerful earthquake that has devastated Haiti has left the country in chaos and in desperate need of our help • The death toll is unknown right now, but it’s believed that up to 100,000 lives have been lost • Media reports that as many as 500,000 people have been left homeless

What You Can Do $50 provides emergency safe havens for children in which they can play, learn and receive trauma counselling $55 provides a family with an emergency kit that provides things like tarps, blankets, soap, towels, personal hygiene items and cooking utensils $100 provides emergency water and sanitation like portable water tanks, chlorine tablets, soap and latrines $400 provides a fully stocked mobile health clinic that will deliver basic medical care to hundreds * These costs are estimates due to the urgency of the situation, and may vary.

What You Can Do World Vision Canada anticipates raising over $384 million per year in total revenue for its community development, emergency relief and advocacy work, of which 14.2% will be used for necessary fund-raising. In cases where donations exceed what is needed or where local conditions prevent program implementation, World Vision Canada will redirect funds to similar activities to help needy people.
