Every year, its 1200 physicians treat more than 50,000 inpatients and 150,000 outpatients. Professor Dr. Markus A. Kuczyk Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology and Urologic Oncology Professor Markus A. Kuczyk is a well-known expert in the field of urology and urologic oncology. He succeeded Professor Udo Jonas as the chairman of the Department of Urology and Urologic Oncology at the Hannover Medical School in April, 2008, where he heads one of the most productive urologic university departments in Germany. He has received national and international recognition for his clinical and scientific work, including one of the highest decorations in the field of urology, the Crystal Matula Award of the European Association of Urology, which he was given for his lifetime academic achievements. Professor Kuczyk’s internationally recognized expertise in the field of urology and urologic oncology is based on his vast experience in research and clinical practice. He is a member of many professional scientific societies and serves in two expert groups for the development of European urology guidelines. Bladder carcinoma Kidney stone disease Minimally invasive surgery in prostate and kidney diseases Clinical Profile Scientific profile The Department of Urology and Urologic Oncology deals with all benign and malignant diseases of the urinary tract. The Department has an excellent international reputation in all its sub-specialties, particularly in the areas of surgical and medical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, treatment of stone disease, andrology, and urinary bladder dysfunction. All scientifically accepted open and minimally invasive surgical treatment modalities are offered here, including endourological laser and photodynamic treatment techniques. The Department is also known as a center for sacral neuromodulation for the treatment of bladder dysfunction. All established treatment options for prostate cancer, such as open and minimally invasive surgery, brachytherapy, and chemotherapy are available here, and new treatment modalities are offered in the framework of clinical studies. • Areas of clinical specialization of the Department of Urology and Urologic Oncology: • Treatment of all malignant diseases of the upper and lower urinary tracts • Urodynamic investigation and sacral neuromodulation • Surgical treatment of female and male urinary incontinence • Chemotherapy for inpatients and outpatients • Minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant diseases • Minimally invasive treatment of stone disease • Infertility and microsurgery • Prosthetics • Andrology • Assessment and treatment of erectile dysfunction • Open and minimally invasive surgery of urethral strictures • Photodynamic cystoscopy The main areas of research in the Department are uro-oncology, urodynamics, and voiding dysfunction. Research work focuses on early diagnosis of tumors with the help of modern and new molecular genetic assessment tools. Basic researchers and clinical scientists of the Department have been honored with many national and international awards for outstanding achievements in urologic and oncologic research.
