  1. “Once For All” Hebrews 10:10

  2. Hebrews 10:10 “By which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

  3. Introduction What does the phrase “once for all” mean to you? An action that does not need to be repeated! An action that accomplished its intended purpose! Something required only a single time! An action that was sufficient! This phrase appears only oncein the scriptures! Hebrews 10:10 - “By which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” The word “once” used many times in the N.T. Our study will consider some of these passages! Especially Heb. 10:1-14

  4. Hebrews 10:1-10 1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. 8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  5. “ONCE” hapax – denotes (a) "once, one time," 2 Cor. 11:25; Heb. 9:7,26,27; 12:26,27; in the phrase "once and again," lit., "once and twice," Phil. 4:16; 1 Thess. 2:18; (b) "once for all," of what is of perpetual validity, not requiring repetition, Heb. 6:4; 9:28; 10:2; 1 Pet. 3:18; Jude 1:3, RV, "once for all" (AV, "once"); Jude 1:5 (ditto); in some mss. 1 Pet. 3:20 (so the AV). ephapax – a strengthened form of No. 1 (epi, "upon"), signifies (a) "once for all," Rom. 6:10; Heb. 7:27, RV (AV, "once"); Heb. 9:12 (ditto); 10:10; (b) "at once," 1 Cor. 15:6. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words

  6. “ONCE” pote - denotes "once upon a time, formerly, sometime," e.g., Rom. 7:9; Gal. 1:23, 1st part, RV, "once" (AV, "in times past"); 2nd part, AV and RV, "once;" Gal. 2:6, RV marg., "what they once were" (to be preferred to the text, "whatsoever they were"), the reference probably being to the association of the twelve Apostles with the Lord during His ministry on earth; upon this their partisans based their claim for the exclusive authority of these Apostles, which Paul vigorously repudiated; in Eph. 5:8, RV, "once" (AV, "sometimes"). See AFORETIME, LAST, LENGTH (at), TIME (past). Note: In Luke 23:18, AV, pamplethei, denoting “with the whole multitude" (pas, "all," plethos, "a multitude"), is rendered "all at once," RV, "all together"). 7. Some things that are “once for all”!

  8. The Physical Death of Man is ONCE! “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Heb. 9:27-28). From Greek word hapax – “of what is of perpetual validity, not requiring repetition” – Eccl. 3:20 – Of Man’s death 2 Sam. 12:23 – Of the death of his infant son 1 Pet. 3:18 – Of the death of Christ Soul of man lives “Returns to God who gave it” at death - Eccl. 12:7 Physical body dies! Returns to dust! – Gen 3:19 Death comes when the spirit departs the physical body! James 2:26; Gen. 25:8; 17; 35:29 Mk. 15:37, 39; Acts 5:5; 12:23

  9. The Sacrifice of Christ was ONCE! His sacrifice was sufficient to take away sin! “For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Heb . 9:26). Animal sacrifices were insufficient to take away sin! Heb. 10:1-14; Rom. 6:10; Heb. 7:26-27 Catholics don’t believe the Bible! They Instituted the “Mass” – claiming death of Christ must be repeated! “The Mass is the unbloody re-enactment of the sacrifice of Calvary. Through the consecration of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, the Mass perpetuates the sacrifice of the Cross by offering to God the same Victim that was immolated on Calvary for the redemption of man.” John A. O’Brien, The Faith of Millions: The Credentials of the Catholic Religion, (Huntington, IN: Our Sunday Visitor, 1938), p. 355. This book has “The Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur” notation which is the official Roman Catholic declaration that a book or pamphlet is free of doctrinal or moral error."

  10. The Appearance of Christ on Earth was ONCE! He has already come in the flesh! “For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Heb . 9:26). “Once” in this passage from hapax - "once, one time," Christ manifested to take away sin! 1 John 3:5; 1 Tim 3:16 Christ death foreordained before the world began! 1 Pet. 1:20; Isa. 53

  11. The Appearance of Christ on Earth was ONCE! Premillennialists teach that Jesus will return to this earth to set up a worldly kingdom centered in physical Jerusalem. The Bible teaching of “once for all” refutes this idea! Jesus will appear a “second time”! “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Heb. 9:28). His return will… Be BRIEF – Jn. 5:28; 1 Cor. 15:52; 2 Pet. 3:10 Be IN THE CLOUDS & NOT ON EARTH – 1 Thess. 4:16-17 Because he accomplished the plan of His Father! John 17:4

  12. The Final Judgment Will Occur ONCE! Jesus is the righteous judge! 2 Tim. 4:8 He will judge the world! Acts 17:30-31; Rom 14:10; 2 Cor. 5:10 Every eye will see Him! Rev. 1:7; Matt. 24:30; Acts 1:11 2 Thess. 1:6-11 All shall hear His voice! John 5:28-29 There is only ONE final Judgment Day!

  13. The Faith Was Delivered ONCE! “there is…one faith…” This means NO OTHER faiths! ONLY ONE! It can and must be preached! Gal. 1:23; Mk. 16:15 It can and must be obeyed! Acts 6:7; 2 Thess. 1:6-10; Rom. 6:17-18 It can and must be “contended for”! Jude 3; Phil. 1:27 The “one faith” is the only faith that saves! Rom. 1:17-18; 3:19-22; Gal. 1:6-7; 3:26 NO OTHER “faith” that will save sinners!

  14. Conclusion Men die ONCE! Never to live physically on this earth again! Christ offered Himself as Sacrifice for man’s sin ONCE! His sacrifice was sufficient! It was for all men, all sin and all time! Christ lived and appeared on earth ONCE! Never to live an appear on this earth again! Saints will “…meet the Lord in the clouds…ever be with the Lord.” The final Judgment will occur ONCE! There will be only one great day! The Faith was delivered ONCE! It is the one and only faith that any man needs for salvation! “Once for All”!
