  3. Personal background

  4. Importance of science and technology Type of knowledge and skillsacquired Type of research required Are youable to make a difference?

  5. Sciencechanged the world Sciencecansolveproblems, butnot all Science and technology Malaria drugs WHO study:save children whengiven Green revolution Requirescontinuedfollowup to improvehealth Requires a just society to come out of poverty trap

  6. Type of knowledge • All disciplines needed • Phocusonagriculture, nexthealth • Alsotechnicalknowledgebadlyneeded • Type of skills • At the same time theoretical and applicationoriented Organizejointly in North and South Type of knowledge and skillsacquired

  7. (South) problemoriented Sandwich scholarshipsshouldbe the golden standard Leads to creation of centers of excellence in the south Type of research

  8. Three cases • The ILRI case • The IUC-JU case • The cross-cuttinginitiative in statistics Sponsoring capacity building

  9. Objectives Develop vaccins against East Coast fever and trypanosomosis to solvediseaseproblemsfor farmers and pastoralists The ilri case (1)

  10. Ways of action • A number of international scientistscollaborateson these problems • Attachment of KenyanMSc and PhDstudents The ilri case (2)

  11. Objectives: Institutionalcapacity building of JimmaUniversity • Main research topic: The iuc-ju case (1)

  12. The IUC-JU program consists of 7 projects: IUC-JU case (2)

  13. IUC-JU case (2)

  14. Phase I • 32 PhDswithNorthsupervisiondefended in Belgium • MSc programmes established, e.g., MScBiostats • PhD schools established, e.g., Infectiousdiseases • Phase II • 10 PhDsfinishedbecomeSouth supervisors • Createpostdoctoralframework • Joint PhDdiplomes in Phase II, e.g., JU - UGent The IUC-JU case: Capacity building

  15. Startedfrom TDR project • Assessing the dam effect on malaria incidence Specific IUC-JU case: malaria PhD

  16. Extension in framework of IUC-JU • StartupPhD in the North • Look at insecticide resistance • Practical • Fundamental Specific IUC-JU case: malaria PhD

  17. And after the PhD … • EstablishPhD school in infectiousdiseases • New PhD student under joint supervisorship • Zoophylic nature of Anophelesmosquito Specific IUC-JU case: malaria PhD

  18. The interest of new IUCs in statistical support • MU-K, UCuenca, ADEKUS, UEM and JU • NSS initiative withEcuador and Vietnam • Initiated discussion amongFlemishacademics • Differenttarget group, different format cross cuttinginitiative in statistics case

  19. Cross Cutting Initiative Stats The current status • TwodebatesheldatUGent and UHasselt • Statistical expertise and consulting at African Universities: the current status and the missing links • Meeting at VLIR withstakeholdersfromNorth and South • Lack of humancapacitywrtStatistics in all different disciplines (Exp. Design, SurvivalAnalysis, Surveys) • Statistical expertise oftentheoretical, not practical

  20. Cross Cutting Initiative Stats Support strategy • Teaching basic statistical courses in a region (e.g. EasternAfrica) with participation of a statistician of the differentIUCs of thatregion • University must thentakeresponsability to addthese courses to curriculum

  21. Cross Cutting Initiative Stats The IUC-JU case • IUC-JU has project to develop Masters in Biostatistics • Each course given twice and then handed over to JU academic staff member • This could also be attended by statisticians from IUCs in Eastern Africa • Interuniversity website could be set up with course material, available to statisticians in IUC for their courses

  22. Now available at nssbiostat.ugent.be, soon locally available

  23. Now available at nssbiostat.ugent.be, soon locally available

  24. Survival analysis, one of the courses

  25. The slides …

  26. Many ICP and PhDstudentsdon’tfind the way back home after studies • ICP in nutrition: 2 IUC-JU students lost • ICP in biostatistics: 3 lost • PhDs: ??? • Does the Northorganizes braindrain? • Why to return ornot to return? • What are most important incentives to return? Are youwilling to make a difference?

  27. Signing contract to service universityfor 4 yearsafterPhD • Function at universityupon return • Young versus old • Incentives to return • Salary • Interestingtasks • Accessibility of international research network Are youallowed to make a difference?
