  2. Background Information This picture was found in the book 1,001 Ways to Live in the Moment, by Barbara Ann Kipfer. Kipfer was born in 1954 and is a linguist and lexicographer. She has written more than 45 books. She holds three PhDs. The book was published in 2009.

  3. Point of View Point of View

  4. What do you notice? The shape the two hands make is the first thing that is noticed while looking at this photo. The way the hands are presented is unusual. Color

  5. What Is The Purpose Of The Advertisement? Audience? The purpose of the advertisement is to show unity of mankind in the world. The entire human race is the audience of this photo. It’s like a call-to-action to all people over the world to put their differences aside and the clichéd “work together to make the world a better place.”

  6. Contrast Contrast

  7. Juxtaposition The two concepts being juxtaposed in this picture would be the two races that are present. The two races are so far apart in the view of society, yet they could live next door to each other.

  8. What Does The Background Suggest? The purple background portrays a sense of warmth, security, and a calm state; which is where the title “Peaceful” comes from. Although it’s a background, the color purple has an importance. In the book The Color Purple, When Shug and Celie were in a field of purple flowers, Shug tells Celie to look at the flowers and embrace their beauty. “You must look at all the good and acknowledge them because God placed them all on earth“ I think this relates to the visual because God put all people on the earth and the two people in the picture have chosen to embrace what God has given them and not view it as an obstacle.

  9. The Deeper Meaning How has the meaning changed? What does the picture mean now?

  10. The Deeper Meaning The diversity makes the earth what it is. The meaning has changed from being a family on earth to just being here with no confrontation. Without the colors of the paint, the picture loses the sense of unity. Without the difference in skin color, the picture is not effective because it doesn’t show unity.

  11. logos Logos

  12. Logical Appeal. What is Logical About This Picture? It’s logical that two people would show appreciation for living on earth. It is very creative.

  13. Ethos Ethos

  14. Ethical Appeal. The picture looks like cooperation. They can trust each other and work together to work towards a common goal. Hands are a normal thing and most people have them. Everyone can relate. It shows social skills and teamwork.

  15. pathos Pathos

  16. When you look at this image, what do you feel? The picture gives a sense of trustworthiness and respect. The purple background makes the focal point, the hands, at ease and relaxed. The contrast of the skin colors evokes a friendly attitude. Hands are a safe place, therefore one feels security when they see this picture.
