  12. Any Questions????

  13. Meet Your Teacher

  14. Make your own questions

  15. Lost In Translation • We want to share all our ideas, but using Google Translate (or other translation devices) is not always a good way. Read the next two slides to see what happens when you use a translator instead of writing directly in a second language:

  16. I hit several spots around America for my summer vacation. I visited with some of the usual folks including relatives, friends, and family. First of all, I made it into the sweltering heat of Alabama, where I was met by a good old bud. When I got to his place, I threw together a pasta tossed with righteous ingredients like mahi-mahi, ripe goat cheese, and select herbs and spices. After such a divine diner, we hung out with this nutty old fellow from the neighborhood– the old boy was a real whack job. He’s one of those beyond the fringe right-wingers who finds conspiracy in everything. He sat around getting loaded on vodka and burning menthols like you wouldn’t believe. He felt a special kind of rage toward Pres. Obama and started loudly tripping out on the administration. We tired of his racist madness, and went back to my buddy’s place for a movie and a night cap. Next, I flew over to Texas where we threw a little party for my dad’s birthday. I was a little embarrassed because I’d forgotten all about it and showed up empty handed. No matter, my brother picked him up a piggy bank, and I kicked in for the meal. I got a great shot of my old man kissing the piggy’s snout, and then we dug in to some steaks. Finally, I headed out to Portland, Oregon. I met a buddy from way back in the day, and it was a quite the reunion. We hit up some hip spots around town, downed a little whiskey, but mostly just got caught up. My old bud has one of those hairless cats, and she hung out with us a good bit.

  18. Could you understand the translated text well? • Did it sound strange? • Now, read a paragraph by the same person, written directly in Korean, without translation:

  20. Instead of translating, follow these tips: • Brainstorm- take notes and outline in English using words that you know. • Write simple sentences. • -short sentences are ok at first. • -better than a translator • use the Korean-English dictionary to look up a word • -ask your teacher to help get the right word • okay to make mistakes • learn by making mistakes • every writer makes mistakes

  21. Key Expressions • How do you say __________ in English? • How do you spell ________? • What does _______ mean?

  22. This is a writing practice! Please: • Use your own words! DON’T use a translator. • DON’T worry about perfect spelling or grammar. This is a rough draft. • DON’T use your dictionary unless you need to find one important word. • Write QUICKLY. Don’t worry about being perfect. • Try to write between 7 and 10 sentences. • Tell some detail. I want to learn about you!

  23. Now you try! • Write a self-introduction paragraph! You can talk about:

  24. HOMEWORK: Write about a friend or family member • Write about the same topics: • Hobbies, Likes/Dislikes, Hometown, Job, Goals, etc. • Remember to write using third person verbs – • He likes… She wants… He is….. • Write at least 7-10 sentences. • Type your paragraph and bring it to class next week

  25. Start with a Topic Sentence. • Here are some examples. If you want, you can use them exactly and just replace your friend’s name in the underlined section: • 1. Mike Siegleris a very interesting person. • 2. Mike Siegleris one of my favorite people in the world. • 3. I’d like to tell you about my good friend, Mike Siegler.

  26. EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH: Friend or Family Member Introduction • I’d like to tell you about my good friend, Mike Siegler. He works at Dongguk University and is in my office. He is originally from Vancouver, Canada. He moved to Korea in 2002, around the same time I did. He also loves watching hockey and is a fan of the Vancouver Canucks. We talk about hockey and he sends me humourous e-mails and text messages making fun of my favourite team. Mike is very intelligent but I think he supports a bad team.

  27. Homework • 1) Print Student Information Pack • 2) Buy graded readers –The Elephant Man first • 3) Basic sentence grammar handout • 4) Type/Print an introduction paragraph in the 3rd Person about friend or family member.
