  5. Part One: Afternoon

  6. A miller and his wife are hard at work.

  7. An argument breaks out between the miller and a blackbird.

  8. The miller’s wife laughs at him…

  9. …and calms the bird.

  10. The miller and his wife exchange pleasantries.

  11. The miller draws water from the well.

  12. A passing gentleman flirts with the miller’s wife while whistling.

  13. He is chased away by the miller.

  14. The miller’s wife laughs.

  15. A procession approaches…the town’s mayor, his wife, and their entourage.

  16. The mayor is struck by the beauty of the miller’s wife.

  17. The mayor’s wife looks on disapprovingly.

  18. The miller and his wife resume their work.

  19. The miller flirts with a young mill-girl.

  20. The miller’s wife becomes jealous and begins to weep.

  21. The mayor is heard approaching.

  22. The miller’s wife imitates his arrogance and limping gait.

  23. The mayor returns to court the miller’s wife.

  24. The miller’s wife assures the miller of her constancy and tells him to hide.

  25. Dance of the Miller’s Wife (Fandango)

  26. The mayor, smitten by the seductive dance, enters and bows to the miller’s wife.

  27. The miller’s wife pretends to be honored by his presence…

  28. …she curtsies

  29. She teases him by offering grapes…

  30. …but in her animated dance, she keeps them out of his reach.

  31. The mayor clumsily lunges for a kiss.

  32. The miller leaps out of hiding.

  33. The mayor is panic-stricken.

  34. The miller rushes in, pretending to look for a thief.

  35. The mayor falls to the ground.

  36. He is fearful of the miller’s revenge.

  37. He flees the scene.

  38. The miller’s wife resumes her dance.

  39. Part Two: Evening

  40. The neighbors come to celebrate a feast at the mill. Men and women drink and dance.

  41. The miller’s wife gracefully thanks her friends, then asks her husband to dance for them.

  42. The Miller’s Dance (Farruca)

  43. After his dance, the miller is congratulated by his friends.

  44. They laugh and drink, and are in high spirits.
