  3. Basics: Geography • Almost every aspect of this great state has ties to the winding river that forms its western boundary and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. . .the Mississippi • Its Native American Chippewa name means "Father of Waters”

  5. Basics: State Flag • The flag’s stars represent the original thirteen colonies • The flag’s colors represent “stars and bars”

  6. Basics: Population • State population-2,910,540 (2006) • White 60.9% • Black persons 37.1% • American Indian and Alaska Native persons, percent, 2006 (a) 0.5%

  7. Basics: Government • State capital –Jackson population-176,614 • Governor – Phil Bryant • Local – Mississippi has a fairly high number of state level representativesHouse – 125 Senate – 52!

  8. Basics: History Organized as a territory in 1798. Admitted as the 20th state to join the Union on December 10, 1817. January 9, 1861, second state to secede from the Union. Readmitted to the Union in 1870.

  9. Basics: Black History • Senator Hiram R. Revels, a minister from Natchez, was the first black senator in the U.S. • 1962 - James Meredith, the first black registrant, enters the University of Mississippi -- the beginning of the end to segregation in public universities and colleges.

  10. Basics: Indian Relocation • Indian lands in Mississippi were opened to white settlement after six major treaties with the Choctaws and the Chickasaws beginning in 1805 • The Indians were relocated  • Six Federally Recognized Native American tribes today

  11. Famous People • Oprah Winfrey – Talk show host, actress and very rich woman! • Elvis Presley – One of the most famous singers in the world, died in the 70’s. • Walton Payton – Football Player

  12. Economy • Mississippi's gross state product in 2001 was $188.1 billion, the 35th largest among the states • A major industry is Entertainment. Casino income in Mississippi ranks third among the states, behind Nevada and New Jersey.

  13. Economy, Continued • Processed foods are Mississippi's most important manufactured products. • Mississippi's most valuable crops are cotton and soybeans. • Mississippi is a leading shrimp and farmed catfish producing state.

  14. Climate Mississippi has: • Mild winters - the mildest weather occurs in the far south. • Hot summers - with little temperature variation. • Lots of rain - the heaviest rains fall in the far south, brought by winds from the Gulf of Mexico.

  15. Hurricane Country • Monday, August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina smashed into the Mississippi Coast. • One of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States, it left the state devestated.
