  2. GEOGRAPHY • Indonesia is the largest country in South East Asia. It is made up of over 17,000+ islands • The islands spread between the Indian and Pacific oceans linking the continent of Asia and Australia • 5 major islands (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Irian Jaya), and 30 smaller groups • 81% of Indonesia consist of sea • Land consist mostly of rich tropical rainforest and fertility of soil enriched by volcanic eruptions, eg. Java.

PEOPLE • Indonesia has a population of about 216 millions people (4th most populous nation in the world) • Ethnic groups: Javanese 45%, Sundanese 15%, Others 40% (including Chinese Indonesian around 5%) • Religion: • Predominantly Islam, 87% • Christians mainly in Sumatra Bataks, Sulawesi Toraks and in Flores, • Hindu and Buddhism.

  4. PEOPLE LANGUAGE • 500 languages and dialects • The Indonesia’s official language is "Bahasa Indonesia” • Bahasa Indonesia incorporates sedikit Dutch, Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic and Portugese.

  5. LIFESTYLE WHAT INDONESIAN EAT? • Most Indonesian eat rice as the main dish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In fact some Indonesians feel they don't eat a meal unless it is rice • Each area in Indonesia has its own traditional food and custom: • Sundanese likes to eat fresh vegetables and sambal. They like to drink tea without sugar • Javanese likes to eat sweet. Tea will be sweet • Padang (West Sumatra) likes to eat hot/spicy food • Chinese-influenced cuisine.

  6. LIFESTYLE TRANSPORTATION • Trains • connect big cities • Buses • the main transport between cities • it is cheaper than trains • Taxis • only common in big cities, especially Jakarta • Taxis are suppose to use meter; however some taxis refused to use meter and ask for a certain amount.

  7. POLITICS AND ECONOMY POLITICS • Jakarta is the capital • A republic with an elected president • Independence Day: 17 August 1945 • President: Megawati Sukarnoputri the first woman president in Indonesia and the 5th president, after Soekarno (her father), Soeharto, B.J. Habibie, Gus Dur.

POLITICS AND ECONOMY ECONOMY • GDP: $687 billion • GDP per capita: $3,000 • Major industries: plywood; rubber; food; petroleum and natural gas; textiles, apparel, and footwear; mining, cement, chemical fertilisers; tourism • Agricultural products: rice, cassava (tapioca), peanuts, rubber, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, copra; poultry, beef, pork, eggs • Major imports: machinery and equipment; chemicals, fuels, foodstuffs • Major trading partners: Japan, USA and Singapore
