Orion 是海神波西頓與亞馬遜女王蓓歐麗雅的兒子，高大英俊又擅長狩獵；他愛上了西奧斯國王的女兒美洛珀。Orion 為了要顯示他的本領，就將雷姆諾島上所有的野獸都捕捉起來獻給美洛珀；然而，西奧斯國王仍然不肯答應把女兒嫁給Orion 。有一天，Orion 因為酒醉而侵犯了美洛珀，國王憤怒的請求酒神戴安尼西斯給予Orion 嚴厲的懲罰；於是酒神便使Orion 沈醉不醒，而國王卻趁機挖掉了Orion 的眼珠。Orion 在清醒之後，摸黑逃到了雷姆諾斯島東部，懇求太陽神 Apollo 的幫助才重獲光明。而Orion 在輾轉逃到了克里特島後，成為狩獵神 Diana 的手下；不料Diana 卻因嫉妒黎明女神歐羅拉愛上了 Orion，就將 Orion 殺死，而Zeus 將他安置在天上，成為『獵戶座』。Orion 曾說過：沒有任何獵物能夠逃過他的手心。他這種自大心態激怒了天后赫拉，她派遣了一隻毒蠍子躲在暗處攻擊Orion ，不料Orion 一時不察被蠍螫到而毒發倒地，卻也正好壓死了這隻毒蠍。而這也是『天蠍座』和『獵戶座』永不相遇的緣故。

  4. 牧夫座 Bootes傳說中是農業之女神－黛美特 （Demeter）的兒子，他發明了耕作的犛，因此後來被安置在天上以表彰他的功勳及對人類的貢獻。另一種說法是，牧夫座本是天空的牧羊人亞特拉斯（Arcturus），後來受天后裘諾的指使，帶著他的獵犬去追逐大、小熊，因此也被稱為「守熊的人」。我們可以發現牧夫和獵犬緊跟著大熊和小熊，在天空北極附近繞著圈子追逐著呢！
