  2. Comida aútentica(authentic food) • The “American” idea of Mexican food is much different than authentic and traditional Mexican food. This Americanized version or “Tex Mex” food has been changed to appeal to the American taste palate. • OBJETIVOS: • SWBAT identify various Mexican foods based on description and/or pictures • SWBAT distinguish traditional Mexican food from “Americanized Mexican” food.

  3. Vocabularionuevo Pido – I would like to order Pidimos – We would like to order ¿Hay..? – Are there / is there? ¿Hay frijoles en el burrito? – Are there beans in the burrito? Sin – Without sin queso – without cheese sin frijoles – without beans sin carne – without meat Con – With Un taco con queso – a taco with cheese

  4. Tortilla A Mexican food staple – tortillas are used in Mexico on a daily basis, much like Americans use bread. It can be made of flour or corn, and can be served warm, cold or deep-fried.

  5. Burrito Bigger than tacos / can be a full meal. Carne, frijoles, arroz, and vegetales are wrapped completely in a warm tortilla. Wrapped in a foil wrapper to hold the meal together and eaten in your hand – no utensils required! Burrito in Spanish means “little donkey”. Named after the little packs that donkeys would carry on their backs.

  6. Taco Dorado Hard shelled taco – Tortilla deep fried and formed into an u-shape. It is filled with carne asada, pollo, frijoles, and vegetales. Topped with sour cream or salsa.

  7. enchiladas A corn tortilla rolled around carne, queso, frijoles, and arroz, and covered in chili pepper sauce. They are baked in an oven. You CANNOT eat this meal with your hands – it is served on a plate.

  8. tamales Made of masa (dough) that is boiled in a corn husk, then filled with carne, queso, and vegetales. Before you eat the tamale, you throw away the corn husk.

  9. Flautas / taquitos Meaning “flute” in English. Corn or flour tortillas are filled with carne asada and cheese, rolled up tightly, then deep fried until crispy. Think of them as “mini tacos”.

  10. Chimichanga A non-traditional Mexican dish, popular in the United States, NOT in Mexico. It is a deep-fried burrito - tortilla filled with carne asada, frijoles, arroz, queso, then wrapped and fried until crispy.

  11. Chalupamexicana Means “small boat”. Traditional style. A tostada platter – dough is formed into a boat/bowl shape then deep fried. Then it is filled with shredded pollo, carne asada, cebolla, pimiento, and topped with salsa.

  12. Chalupaagringada Americanized chalupa – Taco Bell style. Similar to a taco, but instead of using a tortilla – they deep fry wheat flat bread, then fill it with carne asada, queso, lechuga, and top it with sour cream and salsa.

  13. quesadillas Cheese placed between two flour tortillas and melted.

  14. Cheesy Gordita Crunch Warm, pillowy flatbread covered in a melted three-cheese blend, wrapped around a crunchy taco and topped with a zesty Pepper Jack sauce.

  15. Cool ranch doritos locos tacos A crunchy taco made with premium seasoned beef, crisp lettuce, and real cheddar cheese, in a shell made from Cool Ranch® Doritos® Chips.

  16. Chili con carne A thick stew made with chili peppers, garlic, cebolla, frijoles, and carne.

  17. Sopa de tortilla Tortilla soup – a spicy soup made with pollo, frijoles, maiz, zanahorias, papas, and cebollas and topped with tortilla chips.

  18. Carne asada Strips of grilled beef. Typically put into tacos, enchiladas and burritos.
