  2. PreparationMedical Insurance Card • Shortly after you arrive, you will receive a medical insurance card (kenkohokensho/健康保険証). ***Note: the color of your card may be different.

PreparationMedical Insurance Card • Carry this card at all times. • If you go to a hospital, be sure to present this card at the beginning of your visit. • Only required to pay 30% of medical expenses and prescription costs. ***Refer to the orientation handbook for coverage details and payment procedures***

  4. Sompo Supplementary Medical Insurance • Additional insurance provided through the “Sompo insurance company.” • Paid entirely by our contracting organization. • Sompo Japan Hotline (Tokyo) 0120-08-1572 to inform about accident/illness and questions about making a claim. ***Check blue Accident Insurance Policy Guide for more details including how to file a claim***

  5. Medical To Do List • Register at your nearest hospital. • Note: Most hospitals do not offer 24 hr. care, so find an ER hospital. • Retrieve contact info. of supervisor, school/office, JTE’s, and colleagues. • Doctors may speak English, but go with someone who can help translate. • Once a year all civil servants required to get health check. ***Read orientation handbook for more info on doctor visits- a helpful read before you go!***

Sick Leave(byokyu/病級) • ESID • Check contract and confirm amount of sick days. • Example: I have 20 sick days I can take. • READ the conditions in which you can take those days. • Schools may want a doctor’s note as proof. Otherwise, the days will count as nenkyuu/年休 • Talk with supervisor about sick leave. ***Refer to the orientation handbook for coverage details and payment procedures***

Natural Disasters and Emergencies • Important numbers: • Police - #110 • Fire and ambulance - #119 • Register with your country’s embassy • Highly recommended that you register. • Home safety • Unplug electrical appliances when out or sleeping. Turn off your gas. With recent events, I wouldn’t put heavy items on the top of your shelf, unless it’s in a cupboard.

  8. Natural Disasters and Emergencies • Earthquakes • You will experience many earthquakes while you are here. • In the event of another major earthquake, get under a doorway or a desk. After the quake stops, get out into open space. • If you’re in a car, stop driving and don’t leave the vehicle.
