  1. Improving Our Epic Hero Essays / Writing in General March 17, 2010

  2. Title • Hardly anyone even tried to write a title…why? • Begin with a centered title – no bold, no underline • The Quest for the Best: Beowulf as the Ideal Epic Hero • In Search of Glory: Achilles as the Best Epic Hero • A Thinking Man’s Game: Why Odysseus is the Superior Hero

  3. Treatment of titles… • Do it this way… • In Book 2 of Homer’s The Odyssey … • In the poem Beowulf, … • In Homer’s Iliad …

  4. Present Tense • When writing about literature, we do so in the present tense • His ego came from his fighting skills. He was a great warrior and stopped a whole war because he defeated a giant in about ten seconds. • His ego comes from his fighting skills. He is a great warrior and stops a whole war because he defeats a giant man in ten seconds. • His intelligence helped him escape from the Cyclops. He and his men blinded the Cyclops by stabbing him in the eye. • His intelligence helps him escape from the Cyclops. He and his men blind the Cyclops by stabbing him in the eye.

  5. Quotes – you need them! • They can not stand alone • They must be introduced • This is demonstrated when Achilles asks Odysseus, “But why must / the Argives fight / the Trojans?” (336-338). • For example, Odysseus cleverly tricks the Cyclops by saying, “Cyclops / you ask my honorable name? Remember / the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. / My name is Nobody” (231-235). • When quote ends in exclamation point or question mark…keep them in the quote. If ends in period or anything else, remove it.

  6. Write clearly… • Read to yourself out loud…seriously. Ask: Does this sound good? Can I make it better; can I make it more clear? • A description of his battles is that “Achilles exploded forward / fury incarnate behind the curve / of his shield” (297-299). • To exemplify Achilles’ power in battle, Homer writes “Achilles exploded forward / fury incarnate behind the curve / of his shield” (297-299).

  7. Once you quote… • Once you quote, talk about the quote. What does this quote do?What does it show? • Odysseus says, “I had not / yet spoken of Scylla / a plague that could not be dealt with / for my companions may be terrified” (231-234). This quote proves that he is a coward because he lies to his companions. • Nick’s essay

  8. Stay in the 3rd person… • Your name is on the top of your paper…this is your opinion! DON’T SAY I THINK, I BELIEVE, ETC… • I think Beowulf is the best epic hero because he is the strongest. • Beowulf is the best epic hero because he is the strongest. • As you can see, the epic shows… • As the reader can see, the epic shows…
