Initiative on the Future of Nursing • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) partnership • IOM Committee was tasked with an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing • Affordable Care Act (ACA) passed in March 2010 • IOM report was released October 2010

  3. Key Messages from the IOM Report Eight Recommendations with the following Key Messages: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure.

Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action • RWJF initiative coordinated through AARP. • Launched at the National Summit on Advancing Health through Nursing (11/10) • StrategyState Action Coalitions Dissemination of best practices Communication Grant Opportunities Research, Monitoring and Evaluation • National website: http:campaignforaction.org

  5. National Partnerships • Champion Nursing Council Comprised of the country’s leading nursing organizations – advised the Campaign • Champion Nursing Coalition Represents national business, consumer, and health professional organizations.

  6. State Action Coalitions The Driving force of the campaign at the local and state levels, forming a strong, connected grassroots network of diverse stakeholders working to transform health care through nursing.
