The nervous system is a complex network comprised of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves that regulates our body's functions and processes our senses. Most of its operations occur unconsciously. The Central Nervous System (CNS), consisting of the brain and spinal cord, serves as the core of this system, controlling our body’s responses. In contrast, the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) carries messages to and from the CNS throughout the body. The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) manages involuntary actions like heart rate and digestion without conscious thought. Nerve impulses, with a voltage of about 0.1 volts, enable this communication.

Nervous system Your Body’s CPU and Electrical Highway
What is Our Nervous System? • Our Nervous System is made up of our Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerves. • It controls our actions, monitors and controls our body’s many functions and processes our senses. • The cool thing is that most of what our nervous system does is outside our conscious control.
The Central Nervous System • The CNS is made of our brain and spinal cord. • It is the core of our system. • The brain controls our body. • The spinal cord is the main route through which the brain communicates with the body.
The Peripheral Nervous System • The PNS is the network of nerves that carries messages to and from the CNS. • This network is spread throughout our entire body.
The Autonomic Nervous System • The ANS, or involuntary nervous system, works independently of our conscious mind (we don’t have to think about it). • This system controls things like our heart rate, respiration (breathing), digestion, excretion, etc. • It also controls our fight or flight survival instinct. • We can take conscious control of some of these features.
How Does It Work? • Information is sent throughout the nervous system by small electrical impulses known as nerve impulses. • They are around 0.1 volts, and last around 0.001seconds.
