Modesty Definition • the quality of not being too proud or confident about yourself or your abilities • Ex- How do you act with someone praises you? • Do you say a simple thank you, or do you brag and attract attention? In relation to clothing: • : the quality of behaving and especially dressing in moderate ways that do not attract sexual or unwanted attention

  3. #2: Modesty • Modesty deals with proper dress in a community- where to wear a particular garment, and how much that garment covers the body. • Example.: • School vs.The Beach • Funeral vs. Dance Party

  4. In many cultures, a man's and woman's’ body is to be completely covered. • In other cultures, people may wear only the slightest garments.

  5. Modesty is governed in a way a community thinks about the human body and its dignity. • Some cultures feel that it is more dignified to cover the body. • Other cultures feel that displaying the body is the best way to honor it.

  6. Examples: • In the Middle East long robes for both men and women, and veils for women, are considered the correct garments to wear.

  7. Example #2: • In the South Seas Islands of the Pacific, short skirts for men and women, and no covering of the women’s breasts are considered correct and modest

  8. Evolution of Modesty • Cultures and societies are often evolving. What may be considered “modest” during one particular time frame may not apply to another time frame. • Example: consider ‘modest’ wedding gowns

  9. Today’s Class Work:PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENT 5 & 6. Portfolio Requirement #5 • Notes • Create a list of 10 places you need to keep “modest dressing” in mind for. • What would you wear for each? Portfolio Requirement #6 • Put a “modest” title at end of handout. • Create 3 modest outfits on the mannequin handout. • Underneath describe why/how each is modest
